Oddsmakers have their favorites leading up to the WGC Dell Matchplay on Wednesday. Most notably, Justin Thomas (+1200), Bryson DeChambeau (+1400), and Jon Rahm (+1400). Bettors do have some love for DeChambeau, as he’s the second favorite with 6.9% of total bets over the last week. The love for DeChambeau is a little bit confusing given his struggles at this event in 2019, but it looks like many believe that performance is only a blip.

That said, it’s Paul Casey who’s drawing the eyes of bettors. 9.1% of all bets over the last seven days have been placed on Casey. Oddsmakers aren’t as bullish on his chances, giving him +2900 odds to win. Those odds make Casey the 11th favorite. It’s easy to see why bettors like Casey. He gives them a nice blend of long odds and prior success. That kind of combination is always going to appeal to bettors.

Casey has twice finished as the runner-up at the event, 2009 and 2010. Those results are the best that Casey has ever done at any WGC event.  Meanwhile, DeChambeau has only ever played one time at this event, a 40th place finish in 2019. He did however finish as the runner-up at the WGC Championship in 2020.

The biggest surprise is the lack of love that two former champions of this event, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy, are getting little love from bettors. Only 5.5% of bets this past week have been placed on Johnson, and 4.8% on McIlroy.
