Rutgers vs. Boston College Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Friday, September 11th
Rutgers enters Friday night trying to recover from one of the most stunning losses of the opening college football weekend, and it will do so with AJ Surace replacing injured starter Dylan Lonergan at quarterback. Boston College also struggled badly in its opener, and a market that has cut the Eagles from nearly a touchdown favorite to only three points suggests Rutgers is expected to respond. 5 Minute ReadRutgers vs. Boston College Prediction: Can Rutgers Bounce Back After Catastrophic Opening Loss to UMass?
Rutgers travels to Chestnut Hill on Friday night to face Boston College at Alumni Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET on ESPN2, with the Eagles favored by only three points in their home opener.
Both teams are trying to erase ugly opening performances. Rutgers lost outright to UMass as a favorite of nearly 30 points, while Boston College was beaten 34-15 by Cincinnati and did not score until late in the third quarter. The Scarlet Knights must now make the adjustment to Surace, who showed some encouraging signs in relief last week.
Rutgers vs. Boston College Recent Results
Rutgers is 0-1 after losing 37-21 to UMass at home. Lonergan threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted three times before leaving injured, while Rutgers managed only 42 rushing yards and allowed five sacks. KJ Duff was the major bright spot with 196 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Rutgers went 5-7 overall and 2-7 in Big Ten play last season.
Boston College is also 0-1 after falling 34-15 at Cincinnati. The Eagles allowed 254 rushing yards, failed on three fourth-down attempts and were held scoreless until the second half. Boston College finished only 2-10 overall and 1-7 in ACC play last season, so Friday is hardly a matchup between Rutgers and an established opponent coming off a strong year.
Rutgers vs. Boston College Head to Head
Boston College leads the all-time series 20-7-1, but Rutgers won the most recent meeting in Chestnut Hill.

Rutgers' 2022 victory came after a 12-play, 96-yard fourth-quarter touchdown drive. The Scarlet Knights rushed for 212 yards and held Boston College to only 29 on the ground, a formula Greg Schiano would gladly recreate Friday after Cincinnati just ran through the Eagles.

Rutgers vs. Boston College Line Movement and Betting Splits
Boston College opened as high as -6.5 before the spread was cut approximately in half to -3. The total has also dropped sharply from roughly 57.5 to 54.5.
The spread money is the biggest signal on Friday's board. Rutgers has 56% of the bets but an enormous 88% of the handle, while Boston College has 44% of tickets and only 12% of the money. The line moving aggressively toward Rutgers despite the embarrassing UMass loss and the quarterback change is difficult to ignore.
Rutgers vs. Boston College Prediction
There is no way to excuse Rutgers' opener. Losing outright as a massive home favorite exposed problems along the offensive line, in the running game and throughout a defense that allowed UMass to consistently stay on schedule. The important betting question is whether that performance deserves to define the Scarlet Knights one week later.
Surace gives Rutgers an immediate opportunity to change the offensive rhythm. He completed six of nine passes for 77 yards and a touchdown in relief and had competed closely with Lonergan for the starting job throughout the offseason. He is inexperienced, but this is not an emergency quarterback being thrown onto the field with no preparation.
Schiano should also make the running game a much larger priority. Rutgers was far too dependent on the pass after falling behind UMass, but Boston College just surrendered 254 rushing yards to Cincinnati. That creates a much better matchup for the Scarlet Knights to rebuild some offensive balance and take pressure away from Surace.
Duff gives the new quarterback an established bailout option. Even during the disaster against UMass, Duff consistently separated and finished with 196 yards and three touchdowns. Boston College cannot simply crowd the line of scrimmage without risking another explosive receiving performance.
The Eagles have their own significant issues. Mason McKenzie is also a first-year starter, and Boston College struggled to finish drives at Cincinnati while allowing four sacks. A team coming off a 2-10 season has not suddenly earned the profile of a trustworthy favorite simply because Rutgers produced the more shocking Week 1 result.
That is what makes the current spread so revealing. Rutgers just suffered an upset that should theoretically make bettors eager to fade it, then lost its starting quarterback. Yet Boston College's price has still collapsed from approximately -6.5 to -3, with 88% of the money landing on the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers does not need to erase every defensive problem in one week. It needs Surace to protect the football, the running game to take advantage of a Boston College front that struggled against Cincinnati and the defense to play closer to its expected level. That is enough to keep a field-goal game within reach.
Rutgers vs. Boston College Best Bet

The UMass loss was humiliating, but Friday's number already reflects that concern and the betting market is showing substantial resistance to fading Rutgers again. Boston College is only laying a field goal at home despite the Scarlet Knights losing as an enormous favorite and switching quarterbacks.
Surace looked capable in relief, Duff gives him an elite receiving option and Boston College just allowed 254 rushing yards in its own disappointing opener. The 56% bets to 88% money split on Rutgers, combined with the move from +6.5 to +3, makes the bounce-back side much more attractive than the result from last Thursday suggests.
