Alabama vs. Kentucky Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Saturday, September 12th
No. 12 Alabama hits the road for its first SEC test of the season against a Kentucky team that looked immediately comfortable in Will Stein’s new offense. The Crimson Tide remain the more talented roster, but a young quarterback making his first road start and an offensive line already dealing with turnover create an interesting double-digit home underdog spot. Check out this Alabama vs. Kentucky prediction and best bet for Saturday, September 12.

5 Minute ReadAlabama vs. Kentucky Prediction: Can Kentucky Snap String of Losses to Bama with Saturday Shocker Under New Head Coach Will Stein?
Alabama travels to Lexington on Saturday afternoon to face Kentucky at Kroger Field, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on ABC. The Crimson Tide are favored by 10.5 points after opening the season with a dominant 48-10 victory over East Carolina.
Kentucky also enters 1-0 after beating Youngstown State 45-13 in Stein’s head-coaching debut. The Wildcats immediately showed more explosiveness through the air with Notre Dame transfer Kenny Minchey, while Alabama now asks Keelon Russell to make the jump from a comfortable home debut to his first road SEC environment.
Alabama vs. Kentucky Recent Results
Alabama opened with a 48-10 win over East Carolina, scoring on its first five possessions and leading 38-7 at halftime. Russell threw for 249 yards while adding a team-high 86 rushing yards and a touchdown, and Alabama's defense completely erased the ECU rushing attack. The Crimson Tide finished 11-4 last season and reached the College Football Playoff.
Kentucky began the Stein era with a 45-13 win over Youngstown State after going 5-7 overall and 2-6 in SEC play last season. Minchey completed 18 of 27 passes for 301 yards and four touchdowns without a turnover, while Kentucky finished with 507 total yards and scored touchdowns on its first three possessions.
Alabama vs. Kentucky Head to Head
Alabama leads the all-time series 39-2-1 and has won eight consecutive meetings. Kentucky's last victory came in a 40-34 overtime upset in 1997.

- November 21, 2020: Alabama 63, Kentucky 3
- October 1, 2016: Alabama 34, Kentucky 6
- October 12, 2013: Alabama 48, Kentucky 7
- October 3, 2009: Alabama 38, Kentucky 20
The 2023 matchup was another comfortable Alabama victory, with the Crimson Tide producing 444 total yards while holding Kentucky to 253. That history explains part of Alabama's reputation in this matchup, but Saturday features completely different quarterbacks and a new Kentucky coaching staff.

Alabama vs. Kentucky Line Movement and Betting Splits
Alabama has traded anywhere from roughly -8.5 to -10.5 during the week depending on the book, with the current market back near the high end of that range. The broader consensus opened around Alabama -10.5 and is now sitting between -10 and -10.5.
At the -8.5 number, Alabama attracted 63% of spread bets but only 46% of the money, while Kentucky held 37% of tickets and 54% of the handle. That created a larger-average-wager profile on the Wildcats, and getting Kentucky at +10.5 now offers an even stronger cushion than the number where that money initially showed interest.
Alabama vs. Kentucky Prediction
Alabama looked dominant in Week 1, but Russell is still a first-year starter making his first road appearance. He was electric as a runner against East Carolina and showed flashes of the elite arm talent that made him one of the nation's top recruits, but his passing efficiency was less consistent than the 48-point final score suggests. A loud SEC road environment creates a much different challenge.
The offensive line makes that transition even more important. Alabama entered the season replacing essentially its entire starting line, and Michael Carroll, the lone returning starter from last year's group, has now been ruled out. That leaves Russell operating behind an even less experienced combination while dealing with road communication for the first time.
Kentucky also gets healthier at exactly the right time. Starting offensive lineman Malachi Wood and defensive backs Terhyon Nichols and Hasaan Sykes are expected back after missing the opener, while running back Jovantae Barnes also returns. Nichols and Sykes are particularly important against Alabama's receiving depth because Kentucky played Youngstown State without two major pieces in the secondary.
Minchey's debut also gives the Wildcats a legitimate reason to believe they can score enough to stay inside this number. He threw for 301 yards and four touchdowns without taking a sack or committing a turnover, and Stein's offense immediately showed the tempo and vertical passing concepts that made his Oregon units so difficult to defend.
Alabama's defense is dramatically more talented than Youngstown State's, so expecting another 45-point Kentucky performance would be unrealistic. The Crimson Tide held East Carolina to just two rushing yards and went 9-for-9 getting off the field on third down. Yhonzae Pierre and the defensive front can wreck Kentucky's protection if Minchey is forced into obvious passing situations.
The key for Kentucky is avoiding that script. CJ Baxter scored twice in the opener, the offensive line protected Minchey cleanly and the Wildcats were able to stay balanced enough to prevent the quarterback from carrying every possession. A handful of sustained drives that produce 17 to 24 points would put serious pressure on Alabama to win by double digits.
This is also a very different psychological situation from Alabama's opener. Russell could operate comfortably at home while the Crimson Tide overwhelmed East Carolina from the opening drive. Now Alabama goes on the road, opens SEC play and asks a young quarterback behind a reshuffled offensive line to justify a spread of more than 10 points against a team that looked immediately competent in a new system.
Alabama vs. Kentucky Best Bet
- Best Bet: Kentucky +10.5 (-115) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
Alabama should still be favored and owns the higher ceiling on both sides of the football, but +10.5 asks a different question than simply picking the winner. Russell is making his first road start, Carroll's absence further reduces offensive-line continuity and Kentucky gets several important players back after already producing 507 yards in its opener.
The betting profile also supports taking the points. Kentucky drew 54% of the spread money on only 37% of the bets when the number was +8.5, and the current +10.5 gives the Wildcats two additional points of protection. Alabama can control much of the afternoon and still fail to cover if Stein, Minchey and the home crowd keep this within one possession into the fourth quarter.
