Arizona travels to LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday afternoon to face No. 15 BYU in the Big 12 opener for both programs. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on FOX, with the Cougars favored by seven points after opening their season with a 63-7 demolition of Utah Tech.
The Wildcats were impressive themselves, beating Northern Arizona 35-7 behind another efficient performance from veteran quarterback Noah Fifita and a defense that completely erased the Lumberjacks’ running game. This is a substantial step up for both teams after FCS openers and a much more revealing test of where each stands in the Big 12 race.
Arizona vs. BYU Recent Results
Arizona is 1-0 after beating Northern Arizona 35-7. Fifita completed 22 of 29 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns, while the Wildcats accumulated 520 total yards and 206 on the ground. The defense was even more dominant, holding NAU to 193 total yards, minus-seven rushing yards and eight first downs while recording five sacks. Arizona finished 9-4 overall and 6-3 in Big 12 play last season.
BYU is also 1-0 after overwhelming Utah Tech 63-7. Bear Bachmeier completed 16 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another score, and the Cougars piled up 308 rushing yards with 11 different players recording carries. BYU forced four turnovers and led 42-0 by halftime. The Cougars went 12-2 overall and 8-1 in the Big 12 last season before beating Georgia Tech in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Arizona led last year’s matchup by 10 points in the fourth quarter before Bachmeier helped BYU force overtime. The Wildcats still had an opportunity to tie the game in the second overtime before Fifita’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete, ending a 33-27 thriller.

Arizona vs. BYU Line Movement and Betting Splits
BYU opened around -7.5, traded as high as -9.5 at points during the week and has since come back toward the key touchdown at -7. That return toward Arizona is notable after the Cougars’ 56-point opening victory.
BYU has attracted 71% of spread bets but only 53% of the money, while Arizona has just 29% of tickets and 47% of the handle. The Cougars are clearly the public side, but the significantly larger average wager is landing on Arizona. Getting the Wildcats at the full +7 also provides a better number than much of the market offered earlier in the week.
Arizona vs. BYU Prediction
BYU’s opener showed why this offense is so difficult to defend. Bachmeier remains a legitimate dual-threat quarterback, LJ Martin gives the Cougars an established downhill runner and BYU produced 308 rushing yards while spreading the ball across a deep collection of backs and receivers. The offense can force defenses to account for Bachmeier on every option look without becoming overly dependent on his arm.
Arizona is far better equipped to handle that challenge than Utah Tech. The Wildcats allowed only 19.3 points and 308.5 total yards per game last season while holding opponents to 4.7 yards per play and intercepting 22 passes. That defense looked just as physical in Week 1, allowing minus-seven rushing yards and recording five sacks against Northern Arizona.
Stopping Martin and Bachmeier on the ground will determine whether Arizona stays inside the number. BYU leaned heavily on its rushing attack in last year’s double-overtime win, with Martin producing 162 yards. Arizona still managed to take the Cougars deep into overtime, and this year’s defensive front just delivered an extreme opening statement against the run.
The Wildcats also have the quarterback experience needed to survive a difficult environment in Provo. Fifita is now in his fifth season at Arizona and opened 2026 by completing nearly 76% of his passes without turning the ball over. He does not need to produce an explosive shootout. Protecting possession, converting manageable third downs and preventing BYU from creating short fields can keep the game within one score.
Arizona’s offense also showed better balance in Week 1 than it often had during stretches last season. The Wildcats ran for 206 yards, finished with 28 first downs and scored on all four red-zone opportunities. That type of balance is critical because BYU’s defense forced four turnovers against Utah Tech and will punish Arizona if Fifita is forced into obvious passing situations.
BYU deserves to be favored at home. The Cougars went 12-2 last season, return Bachmeier and Martin and have now won five consecutive games against Arizona. LaVell Edwards Stadium is also one of the more difficult environments in the Big 12, particularly for a visiting team making its first road appearance of the season.
The question is whether BYU should be laying a full touchdown against a nine-win Arizona team with an established veteran quarterback and a defense capable of keeping the game compressed. Last season required two overtimes to separate these teams, and Arizona enters this rematch with enough continuity to make another one-possession game realistic.

Arizona is getting a key touchdown after nearly beating BYU outright last season, and the Wildcats enter with an experienced quarterback plus a defense that has carried over its physical identity from 2025. BYU is the more likely outright winner at home, but asking the Cougars to create more than one possession of separation is a much different proposition.
The betting profile strengthens the case. BYU has 71% of the tickets but only 53% of the money, while Arizona is attracting 47% of the handle on just 29% of bets. With the line returning from higher numbers to +7, the Wildcats offer the better value in a matchup that should be considerably tighter than either team’s Week 1 blowout.
