Mississippi State travels to Minneapolis on Saturday afternoon to face Minnesota at Huntington Bank Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on CBS, with the market treating this as essentially a toss-up after significant movement throughout the week.
Both teams cruised in their openers, but they did it in different ways. Mississippi State unleashed quarterback Kamario Taylor in a record-setting offensive performance, while Minnesota combined efficient offense, dominant defense and two special-teams touchdowns in a 59-7 rout of Eastern Illinois.
Mississippi State vs. Minnesota Recent Results
Mississippi State is 1-0 after beating Louisiana-Monroe 62-13. Taylor threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns while adding 59 rushing yards and another score, helping the Bulldogs set a program record with 762 total yards. Mississippi State finished 5-8 overall and 1-7 in SEC play last season, closing with a 43-29 loss to Wake Forest in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
Minnesota is also 1-0 after overwhelming Eastern Illinois 59-7. Drake Lindsey completed 19 of 24 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown, Darius Taylor scored three times on the ground and Javon Tracy returned two punts for touchdowns. The Golden Gophers went 8-5 overall and 5-4 in Big Ten play last season before beating New Mexico 20-17 in overtime in the Rate Bowl.

Saturday will be the first football meeting between Mississippi State and Minnesota.
Minnesota has historically held its own against SEC competition, winning three of its last four meetings with teams from the conference. Its most recent SEC matchup came in the 2020 Outback Bowl, when the Golden Gophers beat Auburn 31-24.

Mississippi State vs. Minnesota Line Movement and Betting Splits
Minnesota opened around a 2.5-point favorite before the market completely flipped, with Mississippi State now laying 1.5 at this book. The Minnesota moneyline has similarly moved from around -130 at the opener to -105, creating a significantly cheaper entry point on the home team.
The current spread action shows some buyback on Minnesota after that move. The Golden Gophers have 58% of spread bets but 75% of the money, compared with 42% of tickets and only 25% of the handle on Mississippi State. The line movement has clearly favored the Bulldogs over the full week, but the larger average spread wager at the current number is landing on Minnesota.
Mississippi State vs. Minnesota Prediction
Mississippi State’s opener could hardly have been more impressive, but Louisiana-Monroe provided little resistance. Taylor accounted for five touchdowns and the Bulldogs averaged nearly 10 yards per play, yet Saturday will be his first opportunity to prove that explosiveness against a physical Big Ten defense.
Minnesota has the personnel to make that adjustment difficult. Anthony Smith returned after leading the Big Ten with 12.5 sacks last season, and the Golden Gophers entered 2026 deep at both edge rusher and linebacker. Eastern Illinois managed only 110 total yards and four first downs in the opener, giving Minnesota a dominant tune-up before facing Taylor’s dual-threat ability.
That front-seven matchup becomes especially important because Mississippi State replaced four starting offensive linemen from last season. The Bulldogs looked excellent in protection against Louisiana-Monroe, but Smith and Minnesota’s pass rush represent a substantial increase in difficulty. Forcing Taylor to escape pressure rather than letting him operate cleanly from the pocket can take away some of the rhythm Jeff Lebby wants offensively.
Minnesota also brings more proven continuity on offense. Lindsey is back after gaining starting experience in 2025, Taylor returns as the leading running back and Tracy and Jalen Smith are established receivers. Much of the offensive line also returns, giving P.J. Fleck a veteran group for a matchup where possession and third-down efficiency should matter considerably more than they did against Eastern Illinois.
Lindsey looked comfortable in the opener, completing nearly 80% of his passes without an interception, while Minnesota converted 10 of 15 third downs and controlled possession for more than 36 minutes. The Golden Gophers do not need to match Mississippi State’s 62-point explosion. They need to keep Taylor on the sideline, lean on Darius Taylor and consistently turn manageable third downs into extended drives.
Mississippi State’s defense also remains less proven than its offense. The Bulldogs allowed 30.2 points per game last season, and although the secondary was heavily reinforced through the transfer portal, the defensive front entered 2026 with major questions after struggling to create consistent pressure last year. Minnesota’s experience up front gives the Gophers a chance to dictate a much more physical game than Mississippi State saw in Week 1.
Home field is another important separator in a matchup priced this tightly. Minnesota went 7-0 at Huntington Bank Stadium last season, and Saturday is Mississippi State’s first road game with Taylor as the established starter. When the market is essentially asking which team wins outright, the more experienced roster playing at home becomes much more attractive than it would be laying a significant number.

Mississippi State has the most explosive individual weapon in Taylor, but Minnesota owns meaningful advantages in continuity, defensive-front experience and home field. The Bulldogs’ rebuilt offensive line handled Louisiana-Monroe easily, but Smith and the Golden Gophers should provide a much more revealing test.
The market move from Minnesota -2.5 to an underdog has also dramatically improved the price. Rather than laying points and juice with the Gophers, Minnesota can now be backed at -105 simply to win at a stadium where it went undefeated last season. The 75% share of spread money on Minnesota at the current number adds another reason to trust the home side in what should be a close game.
