Syracuse hits the road for the first time this season on Thursday night to face Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET on ESPN, with the Panthers laying 10.5 points in the 82nd meeting between the longtime ACC rivals.
The records make the matchup look more one-sided than some of the underlying numbers. Pitt is unbeaten after victories over Miami (OH) and UCF, while Syracuse sits at 1-1 after crushing New Hampshire before a frustrating three-point loss to Cal in which the Orange consistently moved the football but repeatedly hurt themselves.
Syracuse vs. Pittsburgh Recent Results
Syracuse Orange (1-1), (0-1 ACC)
Syracuse is coming off a 21-18 loss to Cal despite outgaining the Golden Bears 436-249, producing 27 first downs and controlling possession for more than 34 minutes. Angeli threw three interceptions, the Orange committed 15 penalties for 132 yards and two missed field goals left additional points on the field, turning what was otherwise a strong statistical performance into a conference loss.
That followed a 66-3 demolition of New Hampshire in the opener, when Syracuse generated more than 500 total yards and Angeli threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns. The Orange went only 3-9 overall and 1-7 in ACC play last season, so Fran Brown is still trying to establish consistency after an eight-game losing streak closed 2025.
Pittsburgh Panthers (2-0), (0-0 ACC)
Pittsburgh enters its ACC opener after surviving UCF 12-7 last week. The Panthers scored only one offensive touchdown, but the defense held UCF to 206 total yards and kept the Knights scoreless until the closing minutes. Heintschel completed 18 of 29 passes for 212 yards as Pitt showed it can win even when its offense is not operating at full efficiency.
The Panthers were much more explosive in their 59-14 opening win over Miami (OH). Heintschel has started the season with seven touchdown passes and no interceptions, giving Pitt stability at quarterback after going 8-5 overall and 6-2 in ACC play last season.
Syracuse vs. Pittsburgh Head to Head
Pittsburgh leads the all-time series 45-33-3 and has won seven of the past eight meetings. Syracuse's only victory during that stretch came in 2023, while the Orange have historically had particular difficulty winning in Pittsburgh.

Last season's meeting ended with Pitt winning 30-13 in Syracuse, while the most relevant cautionary result for the Orange came in the 2024 Thursday night matchup. Syracuse vs. Pittsburgh Line Movement and Betting Splits
Pittsburgh opened around a 9.5-point favorite before moving through the key 10-point mark to -10.5. The Panthers are attracting 54% of spread bets, but those wagers account for only 38% of the handle, while Syracuse has 46% of tickets and 62% of the money.
The moneyline discrepancy is even more dramatic. Pittsburgh has 89% of moneyline bets but only 41% of the handle, while Syracuse has attracted 59% of the money on just 11% of tickets. The spread moving toward Pitt prevents this from being a clean reverse-line signal, but the larger average wagers are clearly showing more interest in the Orange.

Syracuse's loss to Cal is exactly the type of performance that can create value on an underdog the following week. The Orange were better in almost every major statistical category, gaining 187 more yards, producing 11 more first downs and controlling possession, but turnovers, penalties and missed kicks overwhelmed those advantages.
The first task is obvious for Angeli. He cannot give Pittsburgh the same short fields and defensive scoring opportunities that have hurt Syracuse in this rivalry before. His opener showed the other side of the equation, as he threw three touchdowns without an interception against New Hampshire and looked comfortable distributing the football when the offense stayed on schedule.
Syracuse has enough receiving talent to challenge Pitt if Angeli gets time. Umari Hatcher opened the season with 147 yards and two touchdowns, Justus Ross-Simmons gives the Orange another physical outside target and Daunte Bacheyie emerged as another useful option against Cal. Pitt cannot simply dedicate every resource to creating pressure without leaving opportunities downfield.
The Orange have also been much better at sustaining possessions than their 1-1 record suggests. Syracuse is converting more than half of its third downs through two games and has consistently possessed the football for long stretches. That is important as a double-digit underdog because shortening Pitt's number of possessions reduces the opportunities for the favorite to create separation.
Pittsburgh's defense is the toughest part of the matchup. UCF managed only 206 yards and seven points, showing that the Panthers can win games even when the offense is not explosive. Syracuse's offensive line has to keep Angeli out of obvious third-and-long situations, where Pat Narduzzi can become more aggressive with pressure and disguise.
The other side is why laying 10.5 feels excessive. Pitt scored only 12 points against UCF and produced one offensive touchdown at home. Heintschel has been excellent protecting the football, but the Panthers have already shown that their offense can be dragged into a slower game where consistently creating double-digit separation becomes difficult.
Syracuse's defense has the ability to produce that script. Cal managed only 249 total yards and converted three of 12 third downs, while the Orange have consistently gotten off the field on money downs through two games. Syracuse has not won at Pittsburgh in decades, but covering 10.5 does not require ending that drought. A cleaner offensive performance and another strong defensive showing can keep this within one possession late.

Pittsburgh deserves to be favored at home, but the current number asks the Panthers to create significant separation against a Syracuse team whose underlying performance against Cal was considerably better than the final result. The Orange moved the football, controlled possession and defended well enough to win before self-inflicted mistakes changed the game.
The betting action also makes the double-digit underdog attractive. Syracuse has 62% of the spread money on only 46% of the bets, while its moneyline has attracted 59% of the handle despite only 11% of tickets. If Angeli simply reduces the turnovers and Syracuse maintains its defensive efficiency, +10.5 provides plenty of room for the Orange to stay competitive.
