Houston vs. Texas Tech Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Friday, September 18th

The No. 22 Houston Cougars travel to Lubbock for a ranked Friday night Big 12 opener against the No. 13 Texas Tech Red Raiders at Galaxy Stadium. Can Conner Weigman and a much more explosive Houston offense challenge Will Hammond and the defending Big 12 champions in a matchup that has drawn significant market support toward the underdog? Check out this Houston vs. Texas Tech prediction and best bet for Friday, September 18.

Houston vs. Texas Tech Prediction: Can Conner Weigman, Cougars Stun Red Raiders on Friday Night?

No. 22 Houston and No. 13 Texas Tech both enter Friday night at 2-0, turning their Big 12 opener into one of the most intriguing ranked games of Week 3. The Cougars head to Galaxy Stadium for an 8:05 PM ET kickoff on FOX as 7.5-point road underdogs after opening the year with wins over Oregon State and Southern.

Texas Tech is also unbeaten, but neither victory has fully matched the expectations surrounding the defending Big 12 champions. Joey McGuire's team handled Abilene Christian 33-10 before needing a fourth-quarter comeback to escape Oregon State 35-24, while Houston has already scored 110 points through two games behind veteran quarterback Conner Weigman and one of the nation's most productive rushing attacks.

Houston vs. Texas Tech Recent Results

Houston Cougars (2-0), (0-0 Big 12)

Houston opened the season with a 33-20 win over Oregon State behind 533 yards of total offense. Weigman threw for 305 yards and a touchdown while also scoring on the ground, and Amare Thomas caught eight passes for 133 yards and a score as Houston built a 26-7 advantage before putting the game away late.

The Cougars then overwhelmed Southern 77-6, scoring touchdowns on each of their first 11 possessions and rushing for 388 yards. Weigman threw three touchdowns on just 12 attempts before the reserves took over, helping Houston improve to 2-0 after a 10-3 campaign and 6-3 Big 12 record in 2025 that ended with a Texas Bowl win over LSU.

Texas Tech Red Raiders (2-0), (0-0 Big 12)

Texas Tech began its Big 12 title defense with a 33-10 home win over Abilene Christian. Will Hammond returned from the knee injury that ended his 2025 season and threw for 298 yards and a touchdown as the Red Raiders produced 471 total yards while allowing only 194.

Week 2 was much more difficult. Texas Tech trailed Oregon State 24-21 in the fourth quarter before Hammond hit Coy Eakin for the go-ahead touchdown in a 35-24 victory. J'Koby Williams rushed for 116 yards, but the Red Raiders were outgained 472-352 and surrendered 417 passing yards to Braden Atkinson.

Texas Tech went 12-2 overall and 8-1 in Big 12 play last season, winning the conference championship before falling to Oregon in the College Football Playoff. That established a much higher program baseline than Houston, but the first two weeks of 2026 have not yet looked like the dominant version that controlled the Big 12 last fall.

Houston vs. Texas Tech Head to Head

Houston holds a narrow advantage in the all-time series, but Texas Tech has controlled the matchup recently. The Red Raiders have won seven consecutive meetings and 12 of the last 13, including three straight by double digits.

  • October 4, 2025: Texas Tech 35, Houston 11
  • September 30, 2023: Texas Tech 49, Houston 28
  • September 10, 2022: Texas Tech 33, Houston 30 (2OT)
  • September 4, 2021: Texas Tech 38, Houston 21

Last year's 35-11 result was particularly one-sided, with Texas Tech holding Houston scoreless after halftime. Behren Morton threw for 345 yards, J'Koby Williams rushed for 107 and the Red Raiders controlled the game after jumping out to a 25-11 halftime lead.

There is important personnel context this time. Weigman is back for a second season in Willie Fritz's system after helping Houston reach 10 wins, while the Cougars have strengthened the offensive line around him. Texas Tech still owns the psychological edge in this series, but Houston enters this meeting with considerably more offensive continuity than several of those previous matchups.

Houston vs. Texas Tech Line Movement and Betting Splits

Houston has taken some of the strongest underdog movement on the Week 3 board. Early consensus numbers reached Texas Tech -12.5 to -13 before the market compressed all the way toward -7.5, a move of roughly five points toward the Cougars. Some books posted numbers closer to -9.5 earlier in the week, but the DraftKings market has now settled on the key -7.5.

The VSiN DraftKings splits strongly support that move. Houston is taking 65% of spread bets but an even larger 80% of the spread handle at +7.5, while Texas Tech has just 35% of tickets and 20% of the money. That means the average Houston spread wager is noticeably larger than the average Texas Tech wager.

The moneyline split is even more striking. Only 18% of moneyline bets are on Houston at +260, but those wagers account for 58% of the handle, compared to 82% of tickets and just 42% of the money on Texas Tech. The Over is the more public total position with 78% of bets and 66% of the handle, while the total has settled at 52.5.

Houston vs. Texas Tech Prediction

Houston's biggest advantage entering this matchup is continuity at quarterback. Weigman started all 13 games last season and accounted for 36 total touchdowns, including 25 through the air and 11 rushing, before returning for his final college season with the same offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. Through two games, Houston is averaging 55 points and roughly 562 yards per contest.

The Cougars also have enough skill talent to prevent Texas Tech from selling out against the run. Thomas produced 966 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns last season and opened 2026 with 133 yards against Oregon State. Makhi Hughes gives Houston another established weapon in the backfield, while Koby Young adds speed on the perimeter.

The most important matchup may still be Houston's rushing offense against Texas Tech's front seven. Houston is averaging 308 rushing yards per game, while Texas Tech has allowed only 65 per contest and carries an active streak of seven straight games holding opponents under 100 rushing yards. The Cougars do not need to dominate that matchup, but even moderate success would allow Fritz to shorten the game, protect Weigman and keep Texas Tech from turning obvious passing downs into pressure opportunities.

The common-opponent results against Oregon State also make laying more than a touchdown difficult. Houston beat the Beavers 33-20 while producing 533 yards, whereas Texas Tech needed two late touchdowns to turn a 24-21 fourth-quarter deficit into a 35-24 victory. The Red Raiders generated only 352 total yards and gave up 417 through the air in Corvallis.

Texas Tech's offense remains dangerous, particularly if J'Koby Williams and the running game establish control. Williams already has a 116-yard performance this season, while Hammond threw for 298 yards in the opener and has Thomas Castellanos available as another quarterback option. The challenge is a Houston defense that has allowed only 10 rushing yards per game through its first two contests, albeit against a limited sample that includes Southern.

The Red Raiders should also have opportunities against Houston's secondary. Oregon State threw for 376 yards against the Cougars in Week 1, showing that Houston can be attacked vertically if the offensive line gives Hammond time. However, Tech just surrendered 417 passing yards to the same quarterback one week later, creating a similar path for Weigman and Thomas to answer if the Red Raiders score early.

Texas Tech's seven-game winning streak in the series and nine-game home winning streak deserve respect, but the current spread is asking the Red Raiders to win by more than a touchdown against a veteran quarterback and a 2-0 Houston roster coming off a 10-win season. The market has aggressively corrected the matchup toward Houston, and the VSiN handle percentages suggest that move has not stopped larger wagers from continuing to land on the Cougars.

Houston vs. Texas Tech Best Bet

Houston has several legitimate paths to keeping this inside one possession. Weigman's experience, a deep rushing attack and Texas Tech's early vulnerability against the pass give the Cougars enough balance to avoid becoming one-dimensional, while the Red Raiders have yet to produce a complete performance through two weeks.

The move from roughly +12.5 or +13 down to +7.5 means much of Houston's value has already been recognized, but getting the Cougars through the key touchdown number still matters. With 80% of DraftKings spread money backing Houston and an even more dramatic moneyline handle discrepancy, a competitive fourth-quarter game is the most compelling script. A 31-27 type of Texas Tech win would keep Houston safely inside the number.
