5 Minute ReadMiami vs. Wake Forest Prediction: Can Wake Compete with Darian Mensah, Red-Hot Canes on Friday Night as Big Home Underdog?
No. 5 Miami will put its dominant 2-0 start on the line Friday night when the Hurricanes visit Wake Forest for a 7:30 PM ET kickoff on ESPN. Miami is laying 21 points on the road with a total of 56.5 after overwhelming Stanford and Florida A&M by a combined 109 points through its first two games.
Wake Forest is also 2-0, but Jake Dickert’s team has taken a much different route. The Demon Deacons opened with a comfortable win over Akron before surviving Purdue in double overtime, and quarterback Gio Lopez now gets a major step up in competition against a Miami defense allowing just 6.5 points per game.
Miami vs. Wake Forest Recent Results
Miami Hurricanes (2-0), (1-0 ACC)
Miami opened the season by traveling across the country and dismantling Stanford 45-6. Darian Mensah was nearly flawless in his Hurricanes debut, completing 27 of 30 passes for a career-high 401 yards and five touchdowns, while Malachi Toney erupted for a school-record 234 receiving yards and three scores. Miami finished with 549 total yards while holding Stanford to 299.
The encore was even more dominant. Miami beat Florida A&M 77-7 while setting a school record with 856 total yards and an ACC record with 42 first downs. Mensah went 14-of-15 for 252 yards and three touchdowns, pushing his season numbers to 41-of-45 for 653 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. The Hurricanes went 13-3 with a 6-2 ACC record last season, so the early surge is coming from a program that already entered 2026 with a strong baseline.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-0), (0-0 ACC)
Wake Forest started its second season under Jake Dickert with a 38-16 win over Akron. Lopez immediately gave the offense another dimension, throwing for 350 yards and three touchdowns while adding 39 rushing yards as the Demon Deacons piled up 559 yards of total offense.
The Demon Deacons followed that with a much tougher 38-36 double-overtime road win at Purdue. Lopez threw for 225 yards, rushed for a team-high 59 and accounted for three touchdowns, including the tying touchdown and winning two-point conversion in the second overtime. Wake Forest improved to 2-0 after going 9-4 overall and 4-4 in the ACC during Dickert’s first season, which ended with a Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory over Mississippi State.
Miami vs. Wake Forest Head to Head
Miami leads the all-time series 9-3 and has won eight consecutive meetings dating back to 1969. These programs have not played frequently in the modern ACC, however, with the 2024 matchup their only meeting since 2013.
- November 23, 2024: Miami 42, Wake Forest 14
- October 26, 2013: Miami 24, Wake Forest 21
- October 31, 2009: Miami 28, Wake Forest 27
- October 25, 2008: Miami 16, Wake Forest 10
The final score from 2024 makes that meeting look much less competitive than it actually was. Wake Forest trailed only 20-14 entering the fourth quarter and had forced multiple Miami turnovers before the Hurricanes finally broke the game open with 22 unanswered points in the final period. Miami ultimately finished with a 508-193 edge in total offense, but Wake remained within one possession for three quarters.

Miami vs. Wake Forest Line Movement and Betting Splits
Consensus market tracking has Miami opening around -19.5 before climbing to -21, while the total has made an even more aggressive move from approximately 50.5 to 56.5. Miami’s moneyline has also shortened considerably from around -1200 to the current -1600 range.
Public spread betting has leaned toward the Hurricanes, with approximately 67% backing Miami compared to 33% on Wake Forest. That support has moved in the same direction as the spread, pushing bettors who want Miami from below three touchdowns up to the key -21 number.
The total market has been even more aggressive. Public consensus data has shown roughly 70% of selections on the Over, matching a move of roughly six points from the earliest consensus opener. At 56.5, however, much of that offensive optimism has already been priced into the number.
Miami vs. Wake Forest Prediction
There is very little to criticize about Miami’s offense through two games. Mensah has completed 91.1% of his passes with eight touchdowns and no interceptions, and his connection with Toney has immediately become one of the most dangerous in the country. Miami is averaging 702.5 yards and 61 points per game while producing 427 passing yards and 275.5 rushing yards per contest.
That creates a difficult matchup for a Wake Forest defense that has already allowed 380 yards per game and ranks outside the top 100 nationally in both total and passing defense through two weeks. Miami is also converting more than 64% of its third downs, meaning Wake cannot rely on simply forcing the Hurricanes into obvious passing situations and getting off the field.
The reason this spread becomes more interesting at three touchdowns is Wake Forest’s offense. Lopez has thrown for 575 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions while adding legitimate value as a runner. Carlos Hernandez already has 253 receiving yards, and the Demon Deacons have averaged 485 total yards and 38 points through two games. This is significantly more offensive resistance than either Stanford or Florida A&M provided Miami.
Miami also enters the matchup shorthanded in the secondary. Cornerbacks Ja’Boree Antoine, O.J. Frederique and Xavier Lucas are all out, leaving the Hurricanes without three of their top five options at the position. Safety Bryce Fitzgerald has moved to cornerback, while freshman J.J. Dunnigan has stepped into the starting lineup at safety. Against a quarterback with Lopez’s mobility and a receiving threat like Hernandez, that reshuffling gives Wake a specific area to attack.
The Hurricanes can counter that weakness with a defensive front that has been outstanding. Miami is allowing only 57.5 rushing yards per game and 6.5 points, so Wake cannot expect to control the game simply by leaning on its conventional rushing attack. Lopez will likely need to create outside structure, extend third downs and hit explosive throws for the Demon Deacons to stay within range.
Turnovers offer another path to an underdog cover. Miami somehow carries a -3 turnover margin despite winning its first two games by 39 and 70 points, while Wake Forest sits at +1 and Lopez has yet to throw an interception. The concern on the other side is discipline, with Wake averaging 82.5 penalty yards per game compared to only 27.5 for Miami. Giving away possessions or field position against this Hurricanes offense would make three touchdowns disappear quickly.
Miami remains clearly superior on both lines and has enough explosiveness to create separation eventually, much like it did in the 2024 meeting. The question at -21 is whether that advantage produces another four-touchdown margin. Wake has an experienced coach, an unbeaten quarterback playing efficient football and a Friday night home environment, while Miami’s depleted secondary creates a legitimate path to the 20-plus points the Demon Deacons likely need to stay inside the number.
Miami vs. Wake Forest Best Bet
- Best Bet: Wake Forest +21 (-118) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
Miami may ultimately win comfortably, but the current number asks the Hurricanes to clear three full touchdowns on the road against a 2-0 Wake Forest team with enough quarterback play to punish their biggest personnel weakness. The move from roughly +19.5 to +21 has created additional value on the home underdog while much of the public has continued to back Miami.
Wake does not need to stop Mensah for this wager to work. If Lopez can extend possessions, protect the football and exploit Miami’s depleted cornerback room for a few explosive plays, the Demon Deacons can remain competitive deep enough into the game to avoid the type of late avalanche that decided the 2024 matchup. A 41-24 type of result fits the matchup.
