Arizona State vs. Kansas Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Saturday, September 19th

The Arizona State Sun Devils and Kansas Jayhawks take the Big 12 overseas for the inaugural Union Jack Classic and the first college football game ever played at Wembley Stadium. Can Cutter Boley and explosive receiver Reed Harris continue their fast start against Isaiah Marshall and a Kansas team looking to rebound from its rivalry loss to Missouri? Check out this Arizona State vs. Kansas prediction and best bet for Saturday, September 19.

Arizona State vs. Kansas Prediction: Can Jayhawks Surprise in London Matchup?

Arizona State and Kansas both arrive in London at 1-1 for a noon ET kickoff on FS1, with Kansas serving as the designated home team at Wembley Stadium. The Sun Devils are favored by 5.5 points despite coming off a 48-20 loss at Texas A&M, while Kansas is trying to respond after falling 38-21 at home to Missouri.

The records and Week 2 scores tell only part of the story. Arizona State actually outgained Texas A&M by 114 yards before four turnovers created 24 Aggies points, while Kansas remained within one score of Missouri late in the third quarter before the Tigers pulled away. The neutral setting adds another variable to a game in which the market has shown little interest in moving off Arizona State -5.5.

Arizona State vs. Kansas Recent Results

Arizona State Sun Devils (1-1), (0-0 Big 12)

Arizona State opened with a spectacular 70-7 win over Morgan State. Kentucky transfer Cutter Boley threw for a career-high 387 yards and six touchdowns, while the Sun Devils accumulated 682 yards of offense and averaged 7.1 yards per rush. Reed Harris immediately emerged as Boley's primary vertical weapon with 137 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

The 48-20 loss at Texas A&M was far stranger than the final score suggests. Arizona State outgained the Aggies 369-255 and trailed only 24-20 after three quarters before two pick-sixes and another turnover helped Texas A&M score 24 points off giveaways. Harris still produced nine catches for 189 yards and two touchdowns, while Boley threw for 254 yards and two scores.

Arizona State went 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the Big 12 last season. Kenny Dillingham now has a new quarterback in Boley, but the early returns from an offense that has scored 90 points in two games show that the transition has not eliminated its explosive-play ability.

Kansas Jayhawks (1-1), (0-0 Big 12)

Kansas opened with a 51-6 rout of LIU, producing 613 total yards with 336 through the air and 277 on the ground. Marshall threw for 246 yards, Nik McMillan had 130 receiving yards and the Jayhawks held LIU to only 146 total yards.

The Border Showdown was much tougher. Kansas was tied 14-14 with No. 23 Missouri at halftime and trailed only 28-21 entering the fourth quarter before losing 38-21. Marshall threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns but also had two interceptions, while the Jayhawks were limited to 81 rushing yards after controlling the ground against LIU.

Kansas went 5-7 overall and 3-6 in Big 12 play last year, but Marshall has brought a different dimension to the offense through his first two starts. He enters London with 414 passing yards, four touchdowns and 72 rushing yards, while Kansas has scored on all 10 of its red-zone trips with nine touchdowns.

Arizona State vs. Kansas Head to Head

These programs have met only once, producing a memorable Big 12 game in Tempe during the 2024 season. Arizona State won a back-and-forth matchup that featured five fourth-quarter lead changes.

  • October 5, 2024: Arizona State 35, Kansas 31

Kansas led late before Sam Leavitt found Jordyn Tyson for the winning touchdown with 16 seconds remaining. Arizona State rushed for 309 yards behind Cam Skattebo's 182-yard performance, and the teams combined for 896 total yards. Almost all of the central offensive personnel has changed since then, but the first meeting provides a reminder that there has not been much historical separation between the programs.

Arizona State vs. Kansas Line Movement and Betting Splits

The spread has been remarkably resistant. Arizona State opened around -5.5 and remains -5.5 despite substantial public support, while the much larger adjustment has come on the total, which has fallen from an opener around 56.5 to 50.5.

Roughly 79% of the current public-money consensus is backing Arizona State, yet the favorite has not pushed through -6. That is notable line resistance for a team attracting such lopsided support, especially at a neutral venue where the Sun Devils do not receive a traditional home-field adjustment.

DraftKings systems also listed Arizona State among teams to fade when more than 75% of the ATS handle was concentrated on one side. There are conflicting trends, as Arizona State is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 games as a favorite, but the combination of a stagnant spread and heavy favorite support creates a legitimate contrarian argument for Kansas.

Arizona State vs. Kansas Prediction

Arizona State's 48-20 loss should not be handicapped like an ordinary four-touchdown defeat. The Sun Devils were the more productive offense in College Station, outgaining Texas A&M 369-255 and holding the Aggies to 3-of-12 on third downs. The game flipped because of four turnovers, including consecutive fourth-quarter pick-sixes, rather than because Arizona State was overwhelmed snap after snap.

That makes Boley and Harris the biggest threats to a Kansas cover. Boley has already thrown for 641 yards and eight touchdowns, while Harris has 326 receiving yards and four touchdowns through only two games. Harris has eight receptions of at least 20 yards, giving Arizona State exactly the type of explosive weapon capable of turning a close game into a two-score margin quickly.

Kansas has enough offensive balance to answer, however. Marshall has four touchdown passes in his first two starts, McMillan is averaging 91 receiving yards per game and Yasin Willis and Dylan Edwards give Lance Leipold multiple options on the ground. More importantly for an underdog, the Jayhawks have finished every red-zone possession with points and nine of their 10 trips have ended in touchdowns.

The Missouri result also contained a stretch of competitive football that gets lost in the 17-point margin. Kansas was tied at halftime and remained within seven late in the third quarter before turnovers and Missouri's rushing attack created separation. Cleaning up the giveaways and penalties matters enormously against an Arizona State team coming off a game in which turnovers dictated nearly the entire final margin.

Wembley removes another piece normally built into a spread this size. Kansas is technically the designated home team, but neither side has a genuine home-field environment. Arizona State does have a travel advantage after flying to London Sunday while Kansas left Tuesday, giving the Sun Devils additional time to acclimate, but that edge is difficult to value anywhere near the usual three points associated with playing in Tempe.

The market behavior is therefore difficult to ignore. Arizona State has attracted nearly four-fifths of the public money and owns one of the strongest favorite ATS trends on the board, yet the spread remains stuck around the opening -5.5. If sportsbooks were being forced to aggressively reprice the Sun Devils, a move toward -6.5 would be easier to understand. Instead, Kansas continues to receive nearly a full touchdown at a neutral site.

Arizona State is capable of winning the game outright and still failing to cover. Kansas has enough quarterback mobility, red-zone efficiency and defensive talent to keep this within one possession, while the neutral environment should reduce some of the volatility normally associated with backing a road underdog. The first meeting ended 35-31, and another game decided in the final few possessions would make +5.5 extremely valuable.

Arizona State vs. Kansas Best Bet

The Sun Devils deserve more respect than their 48-20 loss suggests, but that actually strengthens the case for treating the spread rather than simply fading a bad result. Arizona State has received overwhelming public support without moving materially beyond its opener, and Kansas gets 5.5 points in a game without a true home-field advantage for either side.

Marshall and the Jayhawks do not need to outperform Boley's explosive passing attack for four quarters. They need to protect the football, finish drives and keep Arizona State from creating the avalanche of short-field points that distorted last week's Texas A&M result. A 27-24 type of Arizona State win would leave Kansas comfortably inside the number.
