5 Minute ReadColorado vs. Northwestern Prediction: Can Deion Sanders' Buffs Compete on Road at Northwestern on Saturday Night?
Colorado visits Evanston for a 7:30 PM ET kickoff on FOX as a 3.5-point underdog. The Buffaloes are 2-0 after winning at Georgia Tech and beating Weber State, while Northwestern has played only once after opening with a 34-18 win against South Dakota State and then entering an early bye week.
This is a fascinating early test for a Colorado team coming off a 3-9 season. Deion Sanders' rebuilt roster has already demonstrated a much more physical identity, while Northwestern enters rested with Chiles and a deep rushing attack that produced 497 yards in Chip Kelly's first game directing the offense.
Colorado vs. Northwestern Recent Results
Colorado Buffaloes (2-0), (0-0 Big 12)
Colorado opened with a 14-13 road win at Georgia Tech, scoring the winning touchdown with 37 seconds remaining before Boo Carter blocked a 45-yard field goal attempt on the final play. Lewis engineered the late touchdown drive, but the bigger development was Colorado's physicality. The Buffaloes rushed for 183 yards while holding Georgia Tech to just 51 on the ground.
The offense then exploded in a 52-21 win over Weber State. Lewis completed 17 of 23 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, Micah Welch rushed for 106 yards and Colorado finished with 578 total yards. The Buffaloes are already 2-0 after finishing just 3-9 overall and 1-8 in Big 12 play last season.
Northwestern Wildcats (1-0), (0-0 Big Ten)
Northwestern opened the season with a 34-18 victory over South Dakota State before receiving a Week 2 bye. Chiles threw for 273 yards in his Wildcats debut and accounted for two touchdowns, while Griffin Wilde produced 104 receiving yards.
The Wildcats also flashed major explosiveness on the ground. Joseph Himon II rushed for 87 yards on only four carries, including an 80-yard touchdown, while Gavin Sawchuk added 69 yards on eight attempts. Northwestern finished with 497 total yards and averaged 9.0 yards per play, its highest figure since 2017.
Northwestern went 7-6 overall and 4-5 in the Big Ten last season, finishing with a 34-7 bowl victory over Central Michigan. David Braun has now produced two winning seasons in his first three full campaigns, providing significantly more recent stability than Colorado had entering 2026.
Colorado vs. Northwestern Head to Head
Colorado and Northwestern have met only twice, splitting the series 1-1. Saturday is their first matchup in 48 years and Colorado's first trip to Evanston since 1951.
- September 30, 1978: Colorado 55, Northwestern 7
- October 13, 1951: Northwestern 35, Colorado 14
There is obviously nothing actionable to pull from games played nearly half a century ago. This matchup is effectively a first meeting between the modern programs, with both teams using transfer quarterbacks and substantially different offensive identities than they had only a year ago.

Colorado vs. Northwestern Line Movement and Betting Splits
Colorado opened around +5.5 before the spread moved two full points toward the Buffaloes to +3.5. The total has simultaneously risen from approximately 45.5 to 47.5, indicating increased confidence that these offenses can produce more than the original market expected.
The spread movement is especially noteworthy because Northwestern has had an extra week to prepare at home. Rather than pushing the rested Wildcats higher, the market has steadily reduced their advantage and moved Colorado through several intermediate numbers toward the key field goal.
Colorado vs. Northwestern Prediction
Colorado's improvement in the trenches has changed the way this team can be handicapped. The Buffaloes were one of the country's weakest rushing defenses a year ago, but held Georgia Tech to 51 yards on 30 attempts in the opener while generating 183 yards themselves. That allowed Colorado to win a low-scoring road game without needing Lewis to carry the offense for four quarters.
Lewis then showed what the passing ceiling looks like against Weber State. He threw for 366 yards and four touchdowns, pushing his season total to 490 yards and five scores without an interception. Joseph Williams has emerged as his leading receiver, while Welch and a deeper running back rotation prevent defenses from simply sitting in passing looks.
Northwestern presents a much more difficult defensive challenge, particularly after having two weeks to prepare. The Wildcats showed strong red-zone resilience against South Dakota State, allowing the Jackrabbits to reach scoring territory repeatedly but holding them to field goals on their first four red-zone trips.
The Northwestern offense is also considerably more dangerous with Chiles. He threw for 273 yards in his debut, Wilde produced an immediate vertical threat and the Wildcats generated explosive rushing plays from multiple backs. Colorado cannot expect to hold Northwestern anywhere near the 51 rushing yards it allowed Georgia Tech if it loses gap discipline against that rotation.
But Colorado has already passed the road test Northwestern has not yet faced. The Buffaloes went into Atlanta, trailed late and produced a game-winning drive before surviving Georgia Tech's final possession. Lewis remained composed in the most important sequence, completing four of six passes on the winning drive. That experience matters when backing an underdog expected to play a one-possession game.
The hook above a field goal is particularly valuable because both teams have shown they can win in different styles. Northwestern can slow the game and lean on its running backs, while Colorado has already won a 14-13 grinder and a 52-21 offensive game. That versatility gives the Buffaloes more paths to remain within three points than last year's roster possessed.
The market movement reinforces the football case. Colorado has gone from +5.5 to +3.5 despite Northwestern's rest advantage, and the Buffaloes still retain the hook above the key three-point margin. Northwestern may ultimately win at home, but asking the Wildcats to create more than a field goal of separation against a 2-0 Colorado team looks aggressive.
Colorado vs. Northwestern Best Bet
- Best Bet: Colorado +3.5 (-115) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
Colorado's 2-0 start has substance behind it. The Buffaloes have already won a true road game with defense and rushing production, then showed the passing-game ceiling against Weber State. Lewis' ball security is particularly important against a Northwestern defense that wants to force opponents to string together long drives.
Northwestern's bye and balanced offense make this a difficult outright upset spot, but +3.5 does not require Colorado to win. With the market already moving two points toward the Buffaloes and Colorado showing significantly better trench play than it did last season, another game decided in the final possession is enough. A 27-24 result either way fits the matchup.
