5 Minute ReadPurdue vs. UCLA Prediction: Can Boilermakers Compete with Bruins on Road in Late Saturday Slate?
Purdue travels more than 2,000 miles for an 11:00 PM ET kickoff on Big Ten Network, catching 14 points against a 2-0 UCLA team. The Boilermakers are 1-1 after beating Indiana State 44-19 and losing a 38-36 double-overtime game to Wake Forest, while UCLA has defeated Cal 45-24 and San Diego State 28-10.
The records make UCLA look significantly stronger, but Purdue’s underlying offensive production creates an interesting two-touchdown spread. Browne is averaging 323 passing yards, Ijeboi is averaging more than 100 rushing yards and Purdue has yet to commit a turnover through two games.
Purdue vs. UCLA Recent Results
Purdue Boilermakers (1-1), (0-0 Big Ten)
Purdue opened with 523 yards in a 44-19 win over Indiana State. Browne completed 23 of 29 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns, giving the Boilermakers their first 500-yard offensive performance since 2020.
The Boilermakers then lost 38-36 in double overtime to Wake Forest despite outgaining the Demon Deacons 455-411. Browne surpassed 300 passing yards for a second straight game, while Ijeboi rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns. Purdue enters Week 3 averaging at least 40 points per game after finishing just 2-10 and 0-9 in the Big Ten last season.
UCLA Bruins (2-0), (0-0 Big Ten)
UCLA opened the Bob Chesney era by going to Berkeley and beating Cal 45-24. The Bruins scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, with Knight producing three touchdowns and Anthony Woods rushing for 118 yards on just eight carries.
UCLA then beat San Diego State 28-10 despite entering halftime scoreless. Knight again scored three rushing touchdowns, Iamaleava completed 14 of 22 passes for 151 yards with an interception and the Bruins scored another 21 points in the fourth quarter. UCLA is already two-thirds of the way to the three wins it managed during a 3-9 season last year.
Purdue vs. UCLA Head to Head
UCLA is 3-0-2 all-time against Purdue, but the programs have not met since 1980. Saturday is their first meeting as Big Ten opponents and Purdue’s first regular-season trip to the Rose Bowl venue in the modern era.
- September 20, 1980: UCLA 23, Purdue 14
- September 15, 1979: UCLA 31, Purdue 21
- September 24, 1960: Purdue 27, UCLA 27
- September 18, 1959: Purdue 0, UCLA 0
The series history offers almost nothing actionable for the current handicap. The more relevant angle is Purdue making a cross-country trip for a kickoff that begins at 11 PM ET, while UCLA stays home for its second straight game at the Rose Bowl.

Purdue vs. UCLA Line Movement and Betting Splits
The spread sits exactly at two touchdowns. DraftKings tickets are split 50-50, but UCLA is taking 61% of the spread handle compared with 39% on Purdue, indicating the larger average wager has favored the Bruins.
Moneyline bettors are far more confident in UCLA, with 86% of tickets and 99% of the handle on the Bruins. The total is even more extreme, with 100% of tracked bets and handle backing Over 52.5.
For Purdue, the attractive part of the market is simply getting the full 14 rather than needing the Boilermakers to seriously threaten an outright upset.
Purdue vs. UCLA Prediction
Purdue’s offense has performed far better than a two-touchdown underdog would normally suggest. Browne leads the Big Ten at 323 passing yards per game, has completed 77.5% of his attempts and has gone over 300 yards in both starts. That level of efficiency gives Purdue a realistic path to answering UCLA scores rather than becoming completely dependent on its defense.
Ijeboi makes the matchup more difficult for UCLA because the Bruins cannot simply drop numbers into coverage. He has 201 rushing yards and four touchdowns through two games, including 114 yards and three scores against Wake Forest, while also contributing as a receiver. Purdue can use that balance to sustain drives and reduce UCLA’s possession count.
UCLA’s running game is the biggest concern. Knight already has six rushing touchdowns, and Chesney brought a large portion of his James Madison infrastructure with him to Westwood. Purdue’s defense allowed Wake Forest to reach 38 points in double overtime and now has to deal with a much deeper rushing rotation capable of producing explosive plays.
But UCLA has also been much less dominant offensively than the 2-0 record initially suggests. The Bruins were scoreless at halftime against San Diego State and did not consistently move the ball until late. Iamaleava threw for only 151 yards with an interception, meaning UCLA’s offense still has stretches where it can stall if the rushing game does not create easy down-and-distance situations.
Purdue’s lack of turnovers is particularly valuable when taking 14 points. The Boilermakers are one of the remaining teams without a giveaway and have scored on all 13 red-zone trips. Those two traits reduce the likelihood of the short-field possessions a favorite normally needs to turn a competitive game into a three-touchdown margin.
Travel is the strongest argument for UCLA. Purdue is flying across the country for its first road game and playing at the latest kickoff time the program has experienced since 2006. That creates a legitimate concern about second-half fatigue, particularly against a UCLA team that has scored 21 fourth-quarter points in both victories.
Even with that disadvantage, the matchup does not require Purdue to control four quarters. Browne and Ijeboi give the Boilermakers enough offensive production to reach the low-to-mid 20s, which forces UCLA to score well into the 30s to comfortably clear two touchdowns. A game that stays competitive for three quarters creates substantial value at +14.
Purdue vs. UCLA Best Bet
- Best Bet: Purdue +14 (-112) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
UCLA deserves to be favored at home, particularly with the travel and late kickoff working against Purdue, but two full touchdowns is a significant cushion for an offense that has averaged 40 points and 477 yards through two games. Browne has been accurate, Ijeboi gives Purdue balance and the Boilermakers have not given opponents free possessions with turnovers.
UCLA’s ability to pull away late is the biggest danger, but Purdue is much better equipped to answer scores than last year’s 2-10 team. Something in the 31-24 or 34-24 range gives UCLA another comfortable win while keeping Purdue safely inside 14.
