SMU vs. Louisville Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Saturday, September 19th

The No. 16 SMU Mustangs head to Louisville for a ranked ACC matchup against the No. 23 Cardinals, who are trying to reverse a series that has been completely controlled by SMU. Can Lincoln Kienholz continue his explosive start and protect home field against Kevin Jennings and a Mustangs offense that has already produced more than 1,100 yards through two games? Check out this SMU vs. Louisville prediction and best bet for Saturday, September 19.

SMU vs. Louisville Prediction: Can Lincoln Kienholz Carry Cardinals at Home in Ranked Showdown?

SMU visits L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium for a 3:30 PM ET kickoff on ESPN2 as a slight road underdog. The Mustangs are 2-0 after winning 27-24 at Florida State and beating UC Davis 56-10, while Louisville is 1-1 after losing 41-38 to Ole Miss and responding with a 59-13 rout of Villanova.

This matchup brings two of the most productive quarterbacks in the ACC together. Jennings has already thrown for 767 yards, while Kienholz became the first Louisville quarterback to open his career with consecutive 300-yard passing performances. The current moneyline makes Louisville only a modest home favorite despite SMU’s recent dominance in the series.

SMU vs. Louisville Recent Results

SMU Mustangs (2-0), (1-0 ACC)

SMU opened conference play by going to Tallahassee and beating Florida State 27-24. Jennings threw for a career-high 430 yards and three touchdowns as the Mustangs produced 585 total yards, converted 8 of 14 third downs and hit six explosive plays.

The Mustangs then rolled past UC Davis 56-10, with Jennings throwing for 337 yards and five touchdowns in just one half. SMU has surpassed 500 yards in both games and enters Louisville averaging 566 yards of offense. The Mustangs are coming off a 9-4 season that included a 6-2 ACC record and bowl victory.

Louisville Cardinals (1-1), (0-0 ACC)

Louisville’s season began with a 41-38 neutral-site loss to No. 9 Ole Miss in Nashville. Kienholz threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns in his first collegiate start, and the Cardinals rallied from a 10-6 halftime deficit to tie the game at 38 before losing on a field goal as time expired.

Kienholz followed with 332 passing yards and two touchdowns in a 59-13 win over Villanova. Louisville produced 635 yards, including 375 through the air and 260 on the ground, and remained turnover-free through two games. The Cardinals went 9-4 last season but finished only 4-4 in ACC play.

SMU vs. Louisville Head to Head

SMU is 4-0 all-time against Louisville and has won both meetings since joining the ACC. The Mustangs dominated last season’s game 38-6 after winning a much tighter matchup in Louisville in 2024.

  • November 22, 2025: SMU 38, Louisville 6
  • October 5, 2024: SMU 34, Louisville 27
  • September 15, 1984: SMU 41, Louisville 7
  • September 3, 1983: SMU 24, Louisville 6

Last year’s 32-point loss gives Louisville a clear measuring stick for how much the offense has changed with Kienholz. The more relevant comparison may be 2024, when SMU went into Louisville and won by only seven in a game much closer to the current market expectation.

SMU vs. Louisville Line Movement and Betting Splits

The spread market is essentially divided. DraftKings has 51% of spread bets and 52% of the handle on SMU +1.5, leaving Louisville with 49% of tickets and 48% of the money. There is no meaningful public imbalance on the spread.

The moneyline is much more revealing. Louisville has 56% of moneyline bets but 83% of the handle at -120, showing a considerably larger average wager on the Cardinals to win outright. SMU is taking 44% of tickets but only 17% of the money.

That difference supports using Louisville on the moneyline rather than laying -1.5 in what projects as a game with substantial late-possession volatility.

SMU vs. Louisville Prediction

Jennings is easily the biggest obstacle to backing Louisville. He threw for 430 yards at Florida State and has already generated 767 passing yards through two games. SMU can create explosives from multiple receiver spots, and the Mustangs have produced more than 500 yards in each game despite playing their opener against a Power Four defense on the road.

Louisville has an answer at quarterback that it simply did not have in last year’s 38-6 loss. Kienholz has topped 300 yards in both starts, demonstrated legitimate mobility and led a comeback against Ole Miss that erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit. His ability to generate explosives gives Jeff Brohm a much better chance of matching Jennings score for score.

The Cardinals also enter with outstanding ball security. Louisville has not committed a turnover through two games, a major advantage against an SMU defense that benefited from mistakes in Tallahassee but still surrendered 199 rushing yards to Florida State. If Louisville can protect Kienholz and stay balanced, the Cardinals should not have to rely exclusively on a high-volume passing game.

SMU’s 27-24 win at Florida State deserves respect because Jennings delivered a winning drive on the road despite throwing two interceptions. The Mustangs have experience winning difficult ACC road games and went 28-5 against conference opponents from 2022 through the start of this season. Louisville cannot expect the home environment alone to flip a series SMU has controlled.

The difference is that Louisville already showed against Ole Miss that its current offense can compete with a ranked opponent possessing elite scoring ability. The Cardinals scored 32 second-half points, tied the game in the final two minutes and lost only on a 48-yard field goal at the horn. A three-point loss to Ole Miss provides a more useful measuring stick than the Villanova blowout.

Home field matters more when the spread is essentially a pick’em. Louisville does not need to create major separation from Jennings and SMU. It needs one additional stop, turnover or red-zone win over four quarters, and the Cardinals get that opportunity at L&N Stadium rather than making another trip to Dallas.

The DraftKings moneyline split reinforces that approach. Spread action is almost perfectly balanced, yet substantially more money is backing Louisville simply to win. In a matchup featuring two quarterbacks capable of generating quick scores and a total approaching 60, removing the requirement to win by multiple points is valuable.

SMU vs. Louisville Best Bet

SMU’s recent dominance in the series and Jennings’ early-season production make laying points unnecessary. Louisville has enough offensive improvement with Kienholz to turn this into a much different matchup than last year’s 38-6 loss, while playing at home gives the Cardinals the slight edge in a game that should remain close deep into the fourth quarter.

The moneyline is the cleaner market. Louisville can win by one on a late field goal and cash the same ticket, and the larger average DraftKings moneyline wager is already landing on the Cardinals despite nearly even spread action. A 31-30 or 34-31 Louisville victory fits the matchup.
