Virginia Tech visits SECU Stadium for a 7:30 PM ET kickoff on FS1 after opening the Franklin era with decisive home wins over VMI and Old Dominion. Maryland is also 2-0, beating Hampton 62-0 before going on the road and handling UConn 38-14.
This represents a much more significant test for both teams. Virginia Tech finished just 3-9 last season before making its coaching change, while Maryland went 4-8 and lost its final eight games. Both have looked dramatically improved in September, making a field-goal spread reasonable despite the Hokies entering College Park as the road team.
Virginia Tech vs. Maryland Recent Results
Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0), (0-0 ACC)
Virginia Tech opened with a 73-3 demolition of VMI, scoring on each of its first four offensive possessions and producing 10 touchdowns. The Hokies followed by beating Old Dominion 44-21 while building a 34-6 halftime lead and scoring on each of their first five possessions.
Grunkemeyer took another major step against Old Dominion, completing 31 of 42 passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns. Luke Reynolds caught eight passes for 108 yards and two scores, while Virginia Tech went 7-for-7 in the red zone and converted 10 of 21 third downs. The defense has been equally disruptive, producing 32 tackles for loss and 12 sacks through its first two games.
Maryland Terrapins (2-0), (0-0 Big Ten)
Maryland was nearly flawless in its opener, beating Hampton 62-0 while rushing for 365 yards and six touchdowns. The Terrapins held Hampton to only 85 total yards, recorded five sacks and intercepted three passes.
The level of competition increased at UConn, but Maryland still won comfortably, 38-14. Washington completed 34 of 41 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns, including a school-record run of 18 consecutive completions. Chris Durr Jr. and Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding both topped 100 receiving yards, giving Washington multiple reliable options on the perimeter.
Virginia Tech vs. Maryland Head to Head
Maryland leads the all-time series 17-15 and has won the last two meetings, although these programs have not faced each other since the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl. The series dates to 1919, and the last 10 meetings are split 5-5.

The 2021 bowl meeting bears little relevance to the current rosters, but Maryland’s recent series advantage does add another layer to Virginia Tech’s first true test under Franklin. Virginia Tech vs. Maryland Line Movement and Betting Splits
The spread is sitting directly on the key field-goal number, with Maryland carrying the more expensive +3 price. DraftKings spread betting is slightly tilted toward the Terrapins by ticket count, with 52% of bets on Maryland, but the money split is much stronger at 67% of the handle.
The moneyline tells a very different story. Virginia Tech is taking 80% of moneyline bets and 100% of the tracked handle at -142. The Over is also attracting overwhelming attention with 89% of bets and 98% of the money at 53.5.
That divergence makes the spread interesting. Bettors willing to simply pick the winner have overwhelmingly chosen Virginia Tech, while those taking the points are showing more respect for Maryland at home.
Virginia Tech vs. Maryland Prediction
The most important development for Virginia Tech has been how quickly Grunkemeyer has settled into Franklin’s offense. Throwing for 327 yards against Old Dominion matters more than the VMI blowout because the Hokies needed him to consistently execute rather than simply lean on a massive talent advantage. His connection with Reynolds gives Virginia Tech a reliable middle-of-the-field target against a Maryland defense that likes to generate pressure.
Protection will determine whether that advantage travels. Maryland has 10 sacks through two games, with DD Holmes, Sidney Stewart, Derrick LeBlanc and others creating pressure from multiple positions. Virginia Tech has actually been even more disruptive defensively with 12 sacks, so both quarterbacks should expect a significant increase in difficulty compared with the first two weeks.
Washington is the clearest threat to the Virginia Tech wager. His performance at UConn was remarkably efficient, and Maryland has surrounded him with more receiving talent than it had a year ago. Completing 34 of 41 passes while two receivers went over 100 yards showed that the Terrapins do not need to rely on one matchup to move the football.
Virginia Tech’s advantage is that its defensive front has been creating negative plays at an elite early-season rate. The Hokies followed 18 tackles for loss against VMI with 14 against Old Dominion, including seven sacks. If that pressure prevents Washington from playing on schedule, Maryland becomes much less comfortable than it looked against Hampton and UConn.
Special teams and field position could matter in a spread sitting exactly at three. Virginia Tech already has a blocked punt, a defensive touchdown and a 79-yard punt return through two weeks, while John Love remains a proven option in the kicking game. Those hidden-yardage advantages become far more meaningful in a matchup expected to remain within one possession.
Maryland’s 20-game nonconference winning streak deserves respect, particularly because this game is at SECU Stadium. But most of that streak predates the current Virginia Tech rebuild, and the Hokies now bring a substantially different coaching structure, quarterback and defensive approach than the team that finished 3-9 last season.
The spread betting money leaning toward Maryland is the biggest market concern, but Virginia Tech has more paths to create decisive plays defensively and on special teams. If Grunkemeyer avoids the turnover that gives Maryland a short field, the Hokies have enough pass rush and offensive efficiency to win by more than a field goal.

Maryland is dangerous enough offensively to keep this competitive, but Virginia Tech has looked more complete through two weeks. The Hokies are generating pressure without sacrificing offensive efficiency, Grunkemeyer is coming off his best performance and the defense has repeatedly created negative plays and short fields.
The key is laying exactly three rather than paying for a larger road-favorite number. If Virginia Tech’s front can prevent Washington from reproducing the clean pocket he enjoyed at UConn, the Hokies can control enough possessions to leave College Park with something closer to a 31-24 victory.
