Broncos vs. Chiefs Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest NFL Odds for Sunday, September 14th

The Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs close Week 1 with an AFC West showdown featuring Bo Nix against Patrick Mahomes in his first game back from a major knee injury. Denver swept Kansas City last season and returns one of the NFL's strongest defenses, while the Chiefs are trying to rebound from a stunning 6-11 campaign. Check out this Broncos vs. Chiefs prediction and best bet for Monday, September 14.

Broncos vs. Chiefs Prediction: Will Broncos Upset Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs in Stacked Monday Night Football Showdown?

The Broncos travel to Arrowhead Stadium for the first Monday Night Football game of the 2026 season, with kickoff scheduled for 8:15 PM ET on ESPN and ABC. Kansas City is a 2.5-point home favorite, the total is 42.5 and the Chiefs are only -130 on the moneyline.

This is the first time Denver has ever opened a season in Kansas City, and the matchup immediately carries AFC West significance. The Broncos ended the Chiefs' nine-year run atop the division last season, while Mahomes returns exactly nine months after suffering a torn ACL and LCL.

Broncos vs. Chiefs Recent Results

Denver finished 14-3 last season, captured the AFC West and earned the No. 1 seed in the conference. The Broncos beat Buffalo 33-30 in the Divisional Round before losing 10-7 to New England in the AFC Championship Game after Nix's fractured ankle kept him out. Nix is now fully healthy, and Denver strengthened an already deep roster by adding Jaylen Waddle to an offense that still features Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., Evan Engram and J.K. Dobbins.

Kansas City went 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The Chiefs lost their final six games after starting 6-5, while Mahomes' season ended in Week 15 against the Chargers. He finished with 3,587 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions before undergoing knee surgery, but he practiced fully throughout game week and carries no injury designation Monday night.

Broncos vs. Chiefs Head to Head

  • December 25, 2025: Denver Broncos 20, Kansas City Chiefs 13
  • November 16, 2025: Denver Broncos 22, Kansas City Chiefs 19
  • January 5, 2025: Denver Broncos 38, Kansas City Chiefs 0
  • November 10, 2024: Kansas City Chiefs 16, Denver Broncos 14
  • October 29, 2023: Denver Broncos 24, Kansas City Chiefs 9

Denver has won three straight meetings after Kansas City spent years dominating the rivalry, although two of those victories came without Mahomes starting for the Chiefs. The most relevant result is the 22-19 Denver win last November, when Nix outdueled a healthy Mahomes in a game decided by a field goal.

Nix has been particularly comfortable against Kansas City through the first four meetings of his career. He owns a 3-1 record against the Chiefs while completing 73.1% of his passes with seven touchdowns against only one interception, and Denver has increasingly looked capable of handling the pressure and disguises Steve Spagnuolo traditionally uses to overwhelm young quarterbacks.

Broncos vs. Chiefs Line Movement and Betting Splits

Kansas City opened around -2.5 and remains at -2.5, so the market has resisted moving through the critical field-goal threshold. Denver has attracted 65% of spread bets but only 53% of the handle, while Kansas City has 35% of tickets and 47% of the money. The Broncos are the more popular side, but the average wager on Kansas City has been larger.

The moneyline is more balanced, with Denver taking 54% of bets and 57% of the handle at +110. The 42.5 total is split exactly 50-50 by tickets, with the Over holding a slight 52% to 48% edge in money. There is no overwhelming betting-split signal here, making the matchup itself much more important than following the public.

Broncos vs. Chiefs Prediction

Mahomes' return is the biggest storyline, but the matchup waiting for him could hardly be more demanding. Denver led the NFL in sacks for the second consecutive season in 2025 and established a franchise record with 68, one year after producing 63. Nik Bonitto led the team with 14 sacks, and Vance Joseph can send pressure from multiple levels without leaving an elite secondary exposed.

Kansas City's protection is also immediately compromised. Starting left tackle Josh Simmons has been ruled out with a back injury, leaving undrafted Kahlil Benson in line for a difficult assignment against Denver's edge rush. Mahomes has always been one of the league's best quarterbacks at escaping pressure, but asking him to immediately regain that mobility nine months after reconstructive knee surgery is different from simply being medically cleared to play.

The Chiefs have attempted to make life easier on him by adding Kenneth Walker III, whose ability to create explosive runs should give Kansas City a much more legitimate rushing threat. Establishing Walker is critical because Denver becomes much harder to attack when Joseph can unleash Bonitto and the pass rush in obvious passing situations.

Denver has answers on the back end as well. Pat Surtain II remains one of the league's premier corners, Talanoa Hufanga gives the secondary another physical piece and the Broncos allowed just 18 offensive passing touchdowns last season. Kansas City has Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Travis Kelce available, but consistently sustaining long drives against this defense should remain difficult.

The other side of the matchup is where Denver can create enough offense to stay inside the number. Nix threw for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns last season while taking only 22 sacks behind one of football's better offensive lines. Garett Bolles and Quinn Meinerz both earned first-team All-Pro honors, giving Denver the protection foundation necessary to deal with Spagnuolo's aggressive pressure packages.

Waddle adds another dimension that was missing from last year's offense. Kansas City can no longer concentrate as much coverage toward Sutton or the middle of the field because Waddle can threaten vertically and create yards after the catch. Combined with Mims and Engram, Nix enters Year 3 with the deepest collection of receiving options he has had in Denver.

There is some uncertainty because Davis Webb will call regular-season plays for the first time after Sean Payton handed him the offense. Arrowhead is also one of the most difficult environments in football, and Chris Jones remains capable of destroying drives from the interior. Those factors are enough to make Kansas City a reasonable favorite, but they do not create much separation between the teams.

The number is ultimately the biggest attraction. Denver went 14-3 while Kansas City went 6-11 last season, the Broncos return almost their entire defensive core and Mahomes is playing his first competitive snap since major knee surgery behind a weakened offensive line. Kansas City can absolutely win at home, but there are too many paths toward another game decided by one possession to comfortably lay points.

Broncos vs. Chiefs Best Bet

Denver has won three straight in the rivalry, Nix has consistently handled Kansas City's defense well and the Broncos own the pass rush best equipped to test how comfortable Mahomes really is on his repaired knee. Getting points with the reigning AFC West champion is preferable to asking Kansas City to immediately return to its old form.

For books offering Broncos +3 at -135, buying the half-point is worth considering. The extra juice is significant, but moving through the most important number in NFL betting converts a three-point Chiefs win from a loss into a push. With recent competitive meetings finishing 22-19 and 16-14, protecting against another field-goal game has legitimate value.
