Spooky similarities in Pakistan World Cup run sees odds PLUMMET on winning the competition

A carbon-copy of their successful 1992 campaign has seen Pakistan cut from 50/1 into 8/1

Pakistan have had their odds decisively slashed on winning the Cricket World Cup, with their progress through the tournament identical to their campaign in 1992.

So much so, that British bookies have cut odds from 50/1 following defeat to India back in May, into just 10/1 following their victory over New Zealand yesterday (June 26th).

A number of spooky similarities to their previous run in 1992 and this campaign have been prominent – with the Pakistan team following exactly the same results, to a tee.

Following their defeat in their opening encounter with the West Indies, Pakistan were pushed out to 40/1 to win the competition.

However, victory over hosts England on June 3rd sent their odds crashing, all the way to 25/1 after they dealt the first blow to the pre-tournament favourites.

Pakistan’s price shortened even further after that, with their match abandoned against Sri Lanka, leading to Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side being cut to 20/1.

However, that short price didn’t last long. Odds were lengthened to 33/1 following their 41-run defeat to Australia on June 10th.

Misery was compounded further onto the Men in Green following an 89-run loss to India on June 16th, slipping to a whopping 50/1 shot to win the tournament.

But then everything changed. A resounding 49 run win over South Africa kick-started the momentum for Pakistan, resulting in bookies taking evasive action and cutting them to 33/1.

That momentum carried into their crucial fixture with New Zealand, and after winning decisively against the Black Caps, they were hammered into 10/1.

In turn, Pakistan are now breathing down the necks of the English and New Zealand cohort, with third and fourth place up for grabs heading into the business end of the tournament.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: "Always exciting, always unpredictable, but never, ever to be written-off – Pakistani cricket is pure Hollywood.

"England only have themselves to blame for their current predicament, and considering the ominous parallels with the 1992 tournament, you can’t help but feel it’s Pakistan’s destiny to march on to glory."
