His odds have been slashed from 28/1 into 2/1 overnight.
England all-rounder Ben Stokes has had his odds dramatically slashed to be named the Sports Personality of the Year, following a heroic closing display against New Zealand.
The 28-year-old was the catalyst in England’s nail-biting Super Over win and has consequently been on the receiving end of a spate of bets from the general public.
In the last 24 hours, Stokes has been cut from a whopping 28/1 to win the individual price, all the way into clear 2/1 favourite at the top of the market.
That’s due to an influx of bets from patriotic cricket punters, with Stokes attracting 89% of all bets since yesterday’s Cricket World Cup match started.
In turn, Stokes has now leapt above previous favourites for SPOTY, Lewis Hamilton (7/1) and Raheem Sterling (11/1) at the top of the market.
Elsewhere, track star Dina Asher-Smith (12/1) is the fourth favourite and followed by last year’s winner Geraint Thomas (16/1).
There are also a number of candidates inside the camp aside from Stokes, with Joe Root (20/1), Eoin Morgan (20/1) and Jofra Archer (33/1) all featuring in the betting.
Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: "The magic Ben Stokes produced yesterday when dead on his feet is worthy of an individual accolade, and his zero to hero story has understandably catapulted him to the top of this list.
"In the imminent Ashes series, some of this crop of cricketers will have an opportunity to carve their names even deeper into the history books. It'll be no surprise to see a few more of the World Cup heroes making their way up this SPOTY market."
