The Ashes is in our rearview and after another thrilling test series between England and Australia, it is time for a different cricket format.

Today we celebrate the start of The Hundred 2023, a tournament and cricket format that was first introduced by the ECB in 2021.

As the name suggests, each team only bowls a maximum of 100 balls. With both teams only batting in one innings each, the game never lasts much past 2 and ½ hours, which attracts a new cricket audience.

Below we will highlight the best welcome bonuses that you can apply to The Hundred in 2023, the latest odds for this year’s league, before also taking a deeper look into the format of this new age of Cricket.

The Hundred Betting Odds

As you can tell from the best and worst odds for each team in both The Hundred and The Hundred Women Outright markets, these tournaments are wide open this year.

The Trent Rockets are the favourites to defend their Men’s title, and are also second in the Hundred Women’s market, so they are expected to be the best franchise at The Hundred 2023. There is clearly not a lot in it though ahead of today’s first double-header.

To highlight how open it is, if you take the best odds for the Trent Rockets at 5/1, that implies a 16.7% chance of the Rockets defending their Men’s Hundred title. The rank outsiders, the Welsh Fire are only 9/1 and therefore are given a 10% chance by the bookmakers.

The Hundred betting odds suggests these tournaments could be won by any team, which is exactly what fans like to see.

Will the Trent Rockets defend their Men’s title from 2022, and will the Oval Invincibles be able to win for the third-straight year in the Women’s tournament?

Today we will find out just how good the Trent Rockets look, as their first double-header takes place this afternoon, with the Trent Rockets Men’s and Women’s teams taking on Southern Brave at Trent Bridge.

The Hundred Format Explained

If you are new to The Hundred, or simply need a refresher when it comes to the format during this summer tournament, then check out the below. This explains what happens in each game, and how the tournament will play out.

The Hundred Game Format

  • 100 balls per innings for each team
  • A change of ends after 10 balls
  • Bowlers deliver either five or 10 consecutive balls
  • Each bowler can deliver a maximum of 20 balls per game
  • Each bowling side gets a strategic time-out of up to 2 and ½ minutes
  • A 25-ball powerplay start for each team in which only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle
  • The non-striker must return to their original end after a caught dismissal
  • No-balls are worth two runs and a free hit
  • Slow over-rates are penalised by one fewer fielder being permitted outside the ring for the final over

The Hundred Tournament Format

Eight teams, all based in cities, will compete in this summer tournament. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams will play at the same ground on the same day, giving us a double-header every day.

There will be 32 league games in the tournament, which is made up of four home games and four away games. There is one game against every team and then a bonus game against your nearest geographical rival.

Whichever team finishes top of the league will progress to the final, where they will away the winner of the Eliminator, which is made up of the two teams that finish in 2nd and 3rd place in the league. This is effectively a Semi-Final.

Who are the Favourites to Win The Hundred?

The Trent Rockets are the early favourites to win The Hundred in the Men’s League, and a repeat of last year, where they topped the group and won the final certainly looks possible.

Rashid Khan should be fit for the whole tournament, which only makes this Joe Root-led Rockets team even stronger, as he only managed two games last year.

The Rockets will look for a better effort in terms of sixes this year, but their economy rate means they should remain in the mix. The Rockets have finished 1st and 3rd in the two renewals so far and look a safe enough bet again, as the 5/1 favourites.

In the Women’s League, the Oval Invincibles are unsurprisingly favourites again. They have won each of the first two renewals of this new tournament, and it is hard to look past them in 2023, even at 4/1.

Suzie Bates led the Oval Invincibles with 232 runs last year, whilst England’s, Lauren Winfield-Hill also added 219 runs, which gave them two of the best batters in the tournament a year ago. Both players return this year, as does captain, Dane van Niekerk, who has led this team to two wins in two years. Will they make it three and live up to their Invincibles title? We think so.
