The favourite for the PDC World Darts Championship has been given a greater than 20% chance of lifting the Sid Waddell trophy on 3rd January.
We are now just a week away from the start of the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship at the Alexandra Palace in North London.
Believe it or not, it has been almost 11 years since the last of Phil Taylor’s 16 world darts titles (14 PDC and two BDO), with ‘The Power’ coming from 0-2 and 2-4 down to beat Michael van Gerwen 7-4 to win the 2013 title.
‘Mighty Mike’ bounced back to land his first title the following year, but has remained stuck on three wins since 2019, when he beat current world champion Michael Smith 7-3 in the final.
In the meantime, Peter Wright (twice), Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith have all prevailed, with van Gerwen twice more a beaten finalist (losing to Wright in 2020 and Smith 12 months ago).
However, it is the sport’s up and coming star who is rated the likeliest winner of the 2024 World Darts Championship according to the latest betting odds market.
Who is favourite to win the 2024 World Darts Championship?
The favourite to win the 2024 World Darts Championship is the World Grand Prix and Grand Slam of Darts champion, Luke Humphries, who can be backed at a best price of 10/3 on Betfred.
The 28-year-old Humphries, nicknamed ‘Cool Hand Luke’, is given an implied 23% chance of winning the 2024 World Darts Championship title at best price through oddschecker, a shade shorter than Michael van Gerwen (20% chance at best price 4/1 on bet365).
Rounding off the top four in the market are 2021 world champion Gerwyn Price (11/2 on Paddy Power) and 2023 winner Michael Smith, who is 12/1 on William Hill. Smith is still to reach a final of a ranked televised event since lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy at the Alexandra Palace.
