Liverpool have emerged as the favourites to win the EFL Cup after defeating Tottenham 2-1 in the last 16. Jurgen Klopp’s men have been drawn against the lowest rank side left in the competition, a home tie against Championship side Leeds United. Liverpool last won a major honour in 2012 and Klopp will be keen to win his first trophy with the club. At best-priced 9/4, they have a real chance of winning the cup with some of the bigger teams already out.
Looking beyond Liverpool, Arsenal and Man United will have their eyes on a domestic trophy as well. Jose Mourinho will have the same motivation as Klopp, which will be to win his first piece of silverware with Man Utd. Mourinho fielded a strong team in the 1-0 win against Man City in the last 16 and next up is a home tie against West Ham. At 7/2, Man Utd have a strong chance of winning the competition.
The final has been contested by two Premier League clubs since 2014 but Newcastle do have a realistic chance of reaching the final and breaking that sequence. After a comfortable 6-0 win against Preston, they travel to Hull in the quarter-final.
Newcastle are today best priced 12/1 to win the cup but prior to their game against Preston, they were a huge 66/1 on them to lift the trophy. That shows how seriously the bookies are taking Rafa Benitez's men and with his cup record they could be the surprise package.
