Mike Phelan sacked as Hull boss

Hull have announced the departure of manager Mike Phelan after less than three months in charge.

Mike Phelan has become the third manager inside two weeks to lose his job in the Premier League with clubs desperate to stay in the top flight.

The 54-year-old was handed the Hull manager's job on a permanent basis in October after impressive during a successful spell as caretaker manager when Steve Bruce left the club in July.

But they have struggled for form recently and after a run of nine league games without a win, and following Swansea's win over Crystal Palace on Tuesday night, Hull now find themselves bottom of the league.

Relegation threatened Crystal Palace and Swansea had both decided to sack their managers before the New Year, with Alan Pardew losing his job before Christmas and Bob Bradley shortly after.

Since the sacking of Bradley, the next manager to leave the Premier League market has been contested between Watford boss Walter Mazzarri and Phelan. The Italian was actually the favourite at 5/4 with Betfair ahead of Phelan at 13/8 prior to Tuesday night's games.

In fact, Mazzarri had shortened throughout the day with many believing if Watford failed to get a result at Stoke it could well spell the end for Mazzarri.

But instead it was Phelan, who had demanded more from his players following their second half collapse against West Brom on Monday where they let a 1-0 half-time lead slip.

Hull will now be looking to appoint a manager with the aim of keeping them in the Premier League, just as Palace have done with Allardyce and likewise Swansea with Paul Clement.
