Southampton captain Jose Fonte hands in transfer request

Jose Fonte has this afternoon told Southampton he would like to leave the club having previously been linked to Man United.

The 33 year-old Portuguese international has been in talks with Southampton to extend his contract but they appear to have now broken down.

Fonte was linked to Man United in the summer and just last month said on Instagram:

"Just to set the record straight I did not reject a new contract. In fact, I have been informed by Southampton that they are not offering me a new contract."

The club have stated that he has been offered an improved deal though, so there appears to be a breakdown in the relationship between club and player.

Now that he has handed in a transfer request the question of where he will move to is up in the air. There have been rumours all season concerning a transfer to either Liverpool or Man United, with Liverpool the favourites to secure his signature at odds of 7/4. Man United come behind them at 9/4, with the possibility of joining his compatriot Jose Mourinho at the club. Moruinho could be quite active in this window, both in buying and selling players to improve his squad.

Everton are also considerable candidates to sign him at 4/1. That would mean a reunion with Ronald Koeman and the opportunity to shore up a defence that has leaked a few goals this season.
