Fonte's odds of moving to Benfica by the end of January have shortened from 33/1 to 11/8 following his transfer request.
Following Jose Fonte's transfer request yesterday, there has been much speculation about where he might move to.
Liverpool started as the favourites to secure his signature but it now appears a move back to Benfica could be on the cards. His odds to make that move have massively dropped from 33/1 to 2/1 and it now appears to be a two horse race between the Portuguese club and Man United. The Old Trafford club are still very much in the frame for Fonte at 6/4.
There is also a possibility that Fonte will join the growing amount of Premier League players moving to China, with Mikel announcing his own move today. A move to any Chinese club is a possibility at 4/1.
Fonte's previous time at Benfica spanned three seasons between 2006 and 2008 after being purchased from Vitoria Setubal as a prospect for the future. As such, he was loaned out for the whole of that period as a Benfica player and did not make an appearance for the club.
One of those loan moves was to Crystal Palace, where the move was made permanent and he has gone from strength to strength since then.
The 33 year-old is now extremely experienced at the top level, making 259 appearances for Southampton and could add real value to a Benfica side going for the title in Portugal's Primeira Liga.
