Stoke make formal bid for Saido Berahino

Stoke are said to have made a bid for Saido Berahino this morning, having failed to sign him last summer.

There is so far no indication of the value of the bid made by Stoke but it is being reported in multiple places that a bid has been made.

The value of the potential transfer is understood to be less than the £20 million offered by Tottenham 18 months ago and a similar offer made by Stoke themselves in the summer. Following news of the bid, Berahino's odds to move to the Bet365 Stadium have been cut to 1/5 in places, with other bookies not quite so sure of the move at 4/6.

Berahino's dwindling value is understandable, considering he hasn't played for West Brom since September and was sent to a training camp in France last month to improve his fitness. The 23-year-old English striker also has not scored a Premier League goal since February 2016.

The major interest in him over the last couple of years stemmed from the season previous to that, when Berahino scored 20 times in that 2014/15 campaign. Stoke have struggled for goals from their strikers this season, with only nine goals between them in all competitions. It remains to be seen if any other interested parties, such as Everton and West Ham, will provide stiff competition for Stoke in the race for Berahino's signature.

With summer signing Wilfred Bony not performing as well as Mark Hughes might have hoped, he will be looking to get Berahino back to his lethal best should the transfer go through this month.
