Steven Gerrard handed coaching role at Liverpool

Steven Gerrard has agreed to take his first steps into coaching and will begin the next phase of his career with Liverpool's Academy.

Steven Gerrard is set to work with various age groups within the Liverpool academy when he starts his full-time coaching role next month.

The Kop legend was expected to begin his coaching career at Liverpool, despite being linked with the vacant manager's position at MK Dons back in November. The 36-year-old was at one point priced as short as 2/7 to take the role but deemed it too early in his career to take on such a position.

While the odds were extremely short for him to join MK Dons, there wasn't any value on punters who expected him to go back to Liverpool.

The former Reds skipper was originally 1/4 for his next job to be coaching within the Liverpool Academy, under-18s or under-23s side when he officially announced his retirement.

The move into the coaching set up at Liverpool was not only a more obvious route for Gerrard but one he admitted he wasn't going to commit to if he didn't feel he could add something to the Academy.

"I’m returning to the place where professionally it all began. However, this isn’t a decision based on emotion - it’s about what I can offer and contribute to Liverpool", explained Gerrard.

He added: "I don’t think I need to explain to people what this football club means to me, but when I knew coming back was a serious option I wanted to make sure it was a substantive role and a role in which I could really help the organisation".

With Gerrard serious about entering management his name will no doubt appear with numerous vacant managerial positions form now on. Who knows, he could even become the new Alan Curbishley when it comes to being linked with a new manager's role.
