Sheffield Wednesday are the new favourites to sign Jordan Rhodes

Sheffield Wednesday have emerged as the front-runners to sign Rhodes after a move to Aston Villa fell through.

Recently we reported that Jordan Rhodes was set to sign for Aston Villa. However, it now seems like both parties couldn’t agree a deal, with Steve Bruce admitting that the striker probably won’t be joining them.

Middlesbrough have received two bids for the unsettled striker with one of them believed to be from Sheffield Wednesday. After recently losing 2-1 to Brighton and Steven Fletcher being sent off, Carlos Carvalhal will want to boost his attacking options as they push for promotion after missing out last season in the play-off final to Hull.

Rhodes has an incredible goal-scoring record in the Championship with Blackburn and he helped Middlesbrough clinch promotion last season scoring six vital goals after his move from Blackburn.

This season has not been nearly as fruitful for Rhodes though, only appearing six times, scoring no goals. Middlesbrough have signed both Rudy Gestede and Patrick Bamford in this transfer window, further damaging Rhodes' chances of appearing more at the Riverside.

Those signings are the reason there has been so much speculation around Rhodes' future. His record in the Championship is extremely good, scoring 92 goals at Ipswich, Huddersfield, Blackburn and Middlesbrough, so anyone willing to take a chance on him is likely to reap the rewards.

Sheffield Wednesday have scored the fewest goals of anyone in the top six, with their need for a proven goalscorer the greatest amongst the promotion chasers. If they can get Rhodes back to the form he showed at Blackburn, they could really push on from their current position in sixth.

Wednesday are currently evens or best priced 9/4 with Betfair to sign Rhodes in the January transfer window. Should that move to Sheffield, or anywhere else for that matter, fall through he would have to remain at Middlesbrough to fight for his place, with odds of 5/4 for him doing that.
