There is growing speculation that Karanka could leave the Riverside after criticising fans following the 1-3 loss to West Ham.
Karanka's odds to leave Middlesbrough have dropped from 20/1 on Saturday to 1/3 this morning in the wake of Saturday's defeat to West Ham.
Karanka was upset with Middlesbrough fans in the stadium that were calling for the team to play a more direct style of play in the face of their poor performance against West Ham.
Karanka said at the time, after the match:
"The fans demanded a lot of the players, we don't know how to play in that way, playing in that way we didn't create one chance and the team was broken on the pitch.
"That's something I don't like at all. We have to improve. (The fans) and we need to understand where we were last season or two seasons ago, and I think these players deserve more respect."
Karanka has since apologised to club officials for his comments but has not done in public yet and the damage could already be done.
It's not the first time that he has let his emotions get the better of him during his time at Middlesbrough, missing a match against Charlton last season, following a row with his players in the build up to the match. It was reported at the time that the players did not want to play for the Spaniard anymore but he did return to the dugout and led the club to promotion to the Premier League.
It's understood that his position is not under threat from matters on the pitch, despite being only four points off the relegation zone. Middlesbrough have also been active in this transfer window under Karanka, signing Rudy Gestede, Patrick Bamford and Adama Traore, while they have been linked to linked to plenty of others. So, it would be a real blow to their chances in the league if they were to relieve Karanka of his duties at this stage of the season.
