Cahill named Captain for Germany Match

The Chelsea defender has grown in “confidence and stature” this season, says Southgate.

It was announced this evening, that Gary Cahill would wear the captain’s armband, when England face Germany in Dortmund tomorrow. With Wayne Rooney out through injury and Chelsea’s defence performing at such a high level - it would seem the sensible choice.

However not all were convinced by the choice, with many fans and pundits taking to social media to express their disappointment. There was a number of reasons cited for this feeling of dismay: Cahill’s past performances, his age and that the appointment reflected the mediocracy of the squad.

We ran our own poll to clear things up and it was fairly inconclusive, with a very slight majority (53%) agreeing that Cahill was the right man for the job.

Hopefully the decision turns out to be a good one and England get a result tomorrow evening. Southgate’s men are currently 4/1 underdogs, with Germany odds on favourites.
