Newcastle secured their instant return to the Premier League after a 4-1 home win over Preston North End.
Newcastle confirmed their place in the top flight following Monday night's victory over Preston. The Magpies went in 2-1 ahead at half-time thanks to goals from Ayoze Perez and Christian Atsu either side of a Jordan Hugill equaliser after a nervy first half with fans desperate to secure promotion.
A much more convincing display from Newcastle in the second half saw them extend their lead when Paul Gallagher was sent off for handling on the line and Matt RItchie converted from the spot, before Perez then rounded off the win minutes later.
Newcastle, who were many people's favourites to return to the top flight as champions, are the second confirmed team to earn promotion after Brighton booked a place in the Premier League for the first time last week. While both sides have now claimed promotion, the race is still on for the title with Newcastle four points behind with two games to play.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles said: "It's been a tough season and today it's paid off. The atmosphere has been unbelievable - the fans have stuck behind us.
"The main aim was to get back into the Premier League but of course it would be nice to win the title. We'll see how the next game goes," he added.
