Mourinho’s side win their third trophy and book their place in next season's Champions League.
After a season of mixed emotions, Man United will be more than happy tonight, as they lifted their third trophy of the season. Not only did they do that but they also ensured they would be playing Champions League football next season.
A Jose Mourinho side has never lost a European Final and that never looked like happening in Stockholm this evening. Ajax never really turned up and struggled to find a way through the robust United defence whenever they did find themselves in the final third. With a tender average age of just 22 years old, it was always going to be a huge challenge for the Dutch side but were favoured pre-match.
United dominated from the off and took the lead early on, through a deflected Paul Pogba effort. The game settled down after this and -cut chances were few and far between. If there were any doubts that they may not add their lead and face a nervy finish, as they have done on occasions this term, these were eradicated shortly after half time. Mkhitaryan ensured a two-goal cushion with an instinctive flick inside the Ajax six-yard box.
So, Mourinho and his men are back in the Champions League and will undoubtedly sign some big names this summer. With strong rumours that Griezmann and James Rodriguez could both be on their way to Old Trafford, will they be lifting a different European trophy next year?
