Odds on Rooney to make World Cup drift following squad omission

England's all-time top-goalscorer has been left out of Gareth Southgate's latest squad.

The odds on Wayne Rooney being part of England's World Cup squad for Russia in 2018 drifted further this morning following the news he was not part of the squad for June’s matches against Scotland and France. The 31-year-old started just 15 league games for Manchester United this season, with the majority of those coming towards the end of the season as Jose Mourinho prioritised the Europa League and with it Champions League qualification.

His lack of playing time has meant he has now missed out on another squad and has not represented his country since England’s 3-0 win over Scotland at Wembley in November last year. The former captain clearly doesn’t feature in the new manager’s plans and is now 2/1 to make Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Elsewhere Jermain Defoe’s odds have been trimmed to 6/4 in places after he retained his place in the latest squad while Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland returns following injury and is odds-on with one firm but 5/2 with another. Ben Gibson and Aaron Cresswell are available at 5/1 and 8/1 respectively after making the 25 but both Luke Shaw and Andy Carroll saw their odds drift as a result of their absence.
