37% of all stakes this week have been on Mexico to win the tournament.
The Confederations Cup kicks off today and eight nations will participate in the tournament held in Russia, a year before the World Cup will be played. Russia, Germany, Portugal, Chile, Mexico, Cameroon, Australia and New Zealand will all contest, but it is somewhat surprising as to who our users are backing.
37% of all stakes on the outright market this week have been on the Mexicans. They have enjoyed a solid World Cup qualification campaign so far, remaining unbeaten in six matches and winning four of these. One confident punter earlier in the week lumped £150 on Mexico at 10/1, and they have since shortened to a best price of 9/1 and are as short as 7/1 in a place.
The other two teams in the competition that have seen support are Portugal and Chile. The European champions are 13/5 and account for 31% of stakes whilst the South American champions are priced at 3/1 and account for 30.1% of stakes. Germany are 13/5 joint favourites, but punters don’t see much juice in their price as they account for just 4% of stakes. This is down to the fact Germany have given all their big names the summer off in preparation for next year’s main event.
No surprises in the top scorer market as 36.2% of stakes have been on want-away forward Cristiano Ronaldo. He is 2/1 favourite and the next in the market is Alexis Sanchez at 6/1. It is Eduardo Vargas, at 16/1, who our users fancy more in the Chile side though, as Sanchez accounts for just 5% of bets whereas Vargas accounts for 28.4%. Mexico’s Javier Hernandez is available at 20/1 and has seen the third most money with 27.7% of stakes.
