Everton fans dreaming of glory after Wayne Rooney signing

Evertonians are expecting Rooney to have a huge impact at the club, with 42% of people backing him to be the leagues top scorer.

The Blue side of Merseyside has been sent into euphoria following the return of fan favourite Wayne Rooney to his boyhood club. However, betting patterns since the announcement suggest Evertonians could possibly be getting a little carried away with their new signing.

As hard as it may be to admit for fans of clubs outside of the red half of Manchester, It is difficult to argue that Rooney has not been one of the best players in the Premier League over the last decade, but there’s no hiding from the fact his form has dipped in recent seasons. The Liverpudlian only managed to find the back of the net on eight occasions in the Premier League in the 2014/15 season, and only five times last season. His recent form has led to England manager Gareth Southgate axing the country’s all-time leading goalscorer and former captain from his squad.

Even with these statistics being widely publicised, it appears Everton fans are backing big things for Rooney on his return to the club. Since the announcement yesterday morning, 42% of bets placed on next year’s Premier League Top Goalscorer, have been on Everton’s new number ten, more than twice the number of bets on any other player. One brave punter has gambled £175 on Rooney being top of the charts at a massive 100/1! Rumours of the username being Cole3n are so far unconfirmed...

The Toffee’s have been cut to as short as 70/1 to win the league, but still remain at 125/1 with one bookmaker on Oddschecker. These massive odds haven’t put off the majority of fans, since Rooney’s arrival 37.85% of bets have been placed on his new club winning the league, more than double the amount placed on his old club. United have been the second most popular pick and have accounted for 16.8% of bets placed.

Even though Leicester City showed anything is possible in the world of football a couple of seasons back, a top four finish for Everton looks a slightly more realistic bet. They’re currently priced at 10/1 to make the top four and following Rooney’s homecoming they’ve been the most popular club in that market too, accounting for 66% of bets.
