Lukaku backed to outshine Morata next season

The United striker is odds on to score more league goals in the head-to-head market.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s contract at Manchester United ending and Diego Costa making it quite clear he wanted to leave Chelsea this summer - two of the Premier League’s giants were left without their star strikers.

Naturally, both clubs set out to replace them at the start of the transfer window. Man United were heavily linked with Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata and Chelsea were hot favourites to sign ex-player Romelu Lukaku from Everton. However, the footballing world was left shocked when Man United successfully bid £75m for Lukaku earlier this month. But it seems Chelsea have now played them at their own game, as they have agreed terms with none other than Alvaro Morata. Which poses the question, who has signed the better player?

This topic has been fiercely debated over recent days and it seems as if both punters and bookmakers have made up their mind. In the last 24 hours, 55% of bets placed in the Premier League Top Goalscorer market have been on Lukaku (9/2), whilst only 10% have been on Morata (10/1). Goalscorer Match Bet markets for the Premier League season ahead have also been created and there is one for Lukaku v Morata; the former being an odds on favourite at 4/9, whilst the Spaniard is out at 13/8.

Whilst both players have played at the highest level for both club and country, it seems Lukaku’s impressive scoring record in the Premier League has made him the clear favourite. Whilst Morata is not proven in English football and has been second choice for much of his career, he may just flourish next season with more game time and arguably the best squad in the league behind him.
