Former striker scored 83 goals for the club during his six-year stay
Chesterfield legend Jack Lester has emerged as the bookies favourite to take over the League Two side following Gary Caldwell’s sacking at the weekend. The former striker made 197 appearances for the club, scoring 83 goals becoming a firm fans’ favourite in the process.
Chesterfield currently sit just one point off the bottom of the football league with one win from their first eight games, scoring just seven goals in the process. Saturday’s latest defeat at home to Accrington Stanley lead to Caldwell’s departure after the former Wigan boss failed to keep the Spireites up last season.
Chesterfield were among the pre-season favourites before a ball was kicked and were as short as 7/2 to bounce straight back to League One at the first time of asking. However, following their dismal start, they are now out to 50/1 to achieve promotion and instead are now fourth favourites for the drop at 4/1 having been 14/1 at the start of August.
Current club captain Ian Evatt is among the other names linked with the job alongside the likes of former players Dean Holden and Kevin Davies.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: Chesterfield are facing up to the prospect of possible back-to-back relegations, and it would seem entirely possible that they would turn to Lester to dig them out of the hole. The 41-year old does not have any senior management experience, but that isn't putting off punters backing a glorious return to the club
