Shrewsbury Town are catching punters' eyes after going nine league games unbeaten.
Shrewsbury Town began the season as League One outsiders. They were priced at a massive 100/1 for the league outright, and took just 0.85% of all bets on the market in pre-season. In fact, 12% of pre-season stakes were on there being a relegation dogfight at New Meadow, but so far they’re proving everyone completely wrong. They currently sit top of the league, three points clear of second placed Peterborugh United.
Town have now made their best start to a season since Graham Turner took them up to the second tier 40 years ago and are now the only team in the EFL to remain unbeaten in the league. Today we’ve seen Shrewsbury take 22% of all League One outright bets, more than any other team. The odds have reacted, and they’re now as short as 11/1 with some bookmakers, although can still be backed at 20/1 best price.
Paul Hurst’s side look to be building their success on a solid defence. They have conceded the second least goals of anyone in League One (6), and were only denied a third clean sheet in four games by an 86th minute Blackburn equaliser this afternoon.
It is still early days, but could there be second-tier football in Shrewsbury for the first time since 1988/89?
Oddschecker spokesman, George Elek: “Shrewsbury weren’t tipped by many as potential promotion candidates, but nine league games unbeaten may have changed that. Time will tell whether they can maintain their form, but for now the Shrews are proving the doubters wrong.”
