Harry Winks gets punters vote for 2018 World Cup

We've seen a number of bets for Harry Winks to be on the plane to Russia this summer.

Harry Winks made his fourth Premier League start against Huddersfield today, as his career starts to gather pace. Mousa Dembele‘s absence allowed Maurcio Pochettino to put his trust in the 21-year old. An ongoing foot injury for Dembele could allow further opportunities for the youngster throughout the season. Winks - who has been described as “the perfect midfielder” by his boss - put in a solid performance against Huddersfield, in what was an impressive 4-0 victory for Spurs.

Punters are now backing Winks to catch the eye of England boss Gareth Southgate this summer. The national side isn’t blessed with a huge amount of depth, so a solid season could see a surprise arrival in Russia. Today we’ve seen 75% of bets on the “To Make England World Cup 2018 Squad” placed on Harry Winks. Subsequently, his odds have shortened from 10/1 to just 7/2 with one bookmaker.

Winks didn’t make the England squad for the upcoming fixtures against Slovenia & Lithuania, but will be hopefully of getting a call-up for the pre-World Cup friendlies, if his first team chances continue at Spurs.

We’ve seen other players prices shorten with the latest squad announcement. Jake Livermore started the month at 4/1, but is now priced at evens. Whilst Fabian Delph could have been backed at 10/1 last weekend. Since his latest inclusion, he’s now just 5/2 with one bookmaker.

Oddschecker spokesman, George Elek: “There’s a heavy Spurs presence in the England squad these days, and punters are backing another one of Pochettino’s youngsters to breakthrough.  A lot will depend on first team opportunities throughout the season though.”
