Ireland and Iceland have odds slashed to win World Cup

Both nations have seen their odds cut to win it all in Russia but which has had the most outright bets of all countries?

Following Ireland’s epic victory against Wales last night and subsequent entry into the World Cup playoffs, their odds have been cut in half to win the World Cup this summer by several bookmakers.

One bookie cut Ireland from 400/1 to 200/1, while another slashed them from 500s to 150/1. They have received three times as many bets today already as they had yesterday to win it all.

Iceland have also seen a huge drop in their odds, with one bookmaker also cutting them from 500s to 125/1 after they became the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup last night.

Amazingly, one bookmaker still has Iceland at 1000/1 to triumph, and perhaps it is no surprise that punters have piled in on this, with Iceland having the most bets to win in Russia next summer since last night.

21% of all market bets on the outright tournament winner have been on the tiny nation.

Punters seemed convinced that Wales would triumph last night, with 53% of bets for a result going on the 7/5 favourite Dragons, and just 26% of bets on an Ireland win.

Oddschecker spokesman George Elek: "Unsurprisingly it is the minnows who are attracting the attention in the World Cup betting today. Iceland are well known to English football fans after last summers European Championships, whilst punters are hoping to tap into the famous luck of the Irish, even though Martin O'Neil's team are yet to book their place in Russia."
