Villa have gone second in the Championship table and are now odds-on for a Premier League table
Aston Villa made it a weekend to remember when they beat city rivals Birmingham City to go second in the Championship for the first time this season, and now punters are backing the Villans in their droves to make a return to the Premier League after two years out.
Villa’s 2-0 win puts Steve Bruce’s men in the driving seat for the automatic promotion place and over the weekend they have been the second-best backed team to go up, attracting a quarter of all bets.
The only team that has more bets in this period are long-term leaders Wolves, who are now 1/200 to go up.
Assuming that Wolves are a certainty, the only other odds-on team are Villa themselves, who are currently 10/11. They have overtaken Derby County in both the table and the betting, with the Rams drifting to 7/5 following a 1-1 draw at home to Norwich.
The performance has cooled punters' interest too, with only 10% of promotion bets going on Derby since the weekend.
Oddschecker Spokesman George Elek: “Aston Villa are finally where they feel they should be under Steve Bruce and Sunday’s Second City Derby win has fans and punters alike believing a Premier League return could well be celebrated in May. Odds-on now to go up, punters are rushing to back the Villans to make it a double Midlands promotion alongside Wolves.”
