Irish punters backing France for World Cup

Irish punters backing France for World Cup

Despite the animosity between the two nations, Irish punters believe that Les Bleus can win in Russia.

Punters in Ireland could be argued to have very short memory spans, that is, when it comes to who the country is backing for the World Cup.

The most popular country in the Emerald Isle is one that was universally loathed following their qualification match in 2009, when Thierry Henry infamously handled the ball twice.

That’s right – France are the most popular bet in Ireland for the prestigious summer tournament.

Despite Henry’s admission to Richard Dunne of handling the ball in the build up to William Gallas’ match-winning goal, punters of the Boys in Green have apparently forgiven the French.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s side were eliminated from qualifying for the 2010 World Cup following the shocking incident.

In total, 16.6% of all bets in Ireland on the eventual winner of the Russia 2018 have been placed on Les Bleus, who are currently a best price of 6/1.

Next most popular among the Irish contingent when it comes to backing teams prior to the tournament, are England who account for 8% of all bets.

Next, Poland are the surprise third most backed team when it comes to the World Cup, accumulating 5% of bets, ahead of neighbours Germany at 4.6%.

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “There is no love lost between Irish football fans and the French national team ever since that infamous control from Thierry Henry, so it is a surprise that they are piling into the enemy.

“Maybe it is what is known as an 'emotional hedge', with the prospect of a victory for Les Bleus so upsetting that they may as well stand to make a few quid if it does happen!”
