Southampton's odds slashed for Premier League relegation after West Ham defeat

It was a nightmare day for Mark Hughes' side and the Saints find themselves in the bottom three.

Mark Hughes said this week that he was ‘baffled’ as to why Southampton find themselves in a relegation dogfight.

He may have found out a couple of reasons why after a horror show at the London Stadium, where West Ham dispatched their relegation rivals 3-0 to ease their own fears.

Hughes now has seven games left to overcome the two point gap to Crystal Palace and pull themselves above the dotted line.

Punters and bookies however don’t like their chances, as 70% of bets in the relegation market have gone on the Saints to go down in the last two hours and their odds have gone from 9/4 into just evens.

2/1 is still available however, but this price could get even shorter if the betting trend continues.

The only teams shorter priced than Southampton are West Brom (1/100), Stoke (4/11) and Huddersfield (6/4). It appears that it could well be a fight to the finish between the Terriers and the Saints to avoid that final relegation spot, and we could well have another famous ‘Survival Sunday’.

Oddschecker Spokesman George Elek: “Southampton would have hoped that a change in manager would have changed their fortunes but Saturday’s thumping at West Ham underlines just how much trouble the Saints are in. The bookies have been quick to slash their odds to just 2/1 best price to go down and we could well see all three promoted sides stay in the Premier League, something that has only happened twice before."
