Mick McCarthy backed to stay in management and join West Brom

The majority of punters think he’ll return to the Midlands and join the Baggies.

Mick McCarthy finally ended the ‘Will he, won’t he’ saga by announcing that he will leave Ipswich at the end of this season and if punters are correct, he won’t be out of management for much time at all.

West Brom’s job has become vacant with the sacking of Alan Pardew and the Yorkshireman has been installed as one of the frontrunners for the job with several bookmakers.

As short as 2/1 and outright favourite in places, you can still get a best price of 5/1. It seems that punters are eager to pick up at those odds, as he is the best backed selection in the market since news of Pardew’s departure broke on Bank Holiday Monday.

The next best-backed selection is Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder, who is the main market mover going from 28s all the way to 4/1, with 6/1 still available.

There is not a lot of love for general market favourite Michael Appleton however. The former Leicester caretaker and Oxford boss has only been backed by 9% of punters, comfortably behind the likes of McCarthy and Wilder, despite being 7/2.

A former gaffer of Albion’s Black Country rivals Wolves, it would be interesting to see how Baggies fans would take to no-nonsense McCarthy. But with their eight-year stay in the Premier Legaue almost certainly coming to an end, the 59-year old may be the perfect person to turn the club around.

Oddschecker Spokesman George Elek: “West Brom look to be planning for the Championship and may well turn to a man who knows the league better than anyone. McCarthy will leave Ipswich as a solid mid-table team, but will surely be granted more funds at The Hawthorns should he get the job, as he looks to prove himself as still capable of getting teams into the Premier League.”
