Coleman leaves as the Black Cats are set to change owners - Could McCarthy rejoin the club he managed in the Premier League?
There’s no denying that Mick McCarthy has been a name bandied around since the news broke of his departure from Ipswich after five years.
There were rumours of the Yorkshireman taking the Leeds job, or a possible homecoming at Barnsley. But there could be more substance behind a return to the club he took to the Championship over ten years ago.
McCarthy does well traditionally on small budgets, and he may be the perfect man to try and steady the ship at the Stadium Of Light as they gear up to play in the Third Tier for only the second time in their history.
In the embryonic market, McCarthy is as short as 6/4 to take the job, with a current best price of 3/1.
Michael Appleton comes next at 7/2, with Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder currently 5/1.
Jaam Stam is the same price of 5/1, while a more spectacular name in Kevin Phillips is 10/1.
If the latter does return, we could well see a return of the Phillips/Niall Quinn partnership in an off-the-field capacity, something that elder fans on Wearside will remember fondly!
Oddschecker Spokesman George Elek: “Sunderland need a man to steady the ship, work on a budget and galvanise a squad that could well be youthful and hungry next season.
“With all that being said, it’s clear to see why Mick McCarthy is the current favourite to return to the club that he took to the Premier League. Although the challenge is greater this time around, it’s one that McCarthy could well jump at as he looks to get himself back into management.”
