The ‘Golden Generation’ were probably England’s last real hopes of winning a major tournament but the expectation was clearly too high and it’s been a car crash ever since.
However, Southgate’s young squad has clearly persuaded plenty of punters they are the team which represents the value next month.
It would take a brave person to mimic Alan Hansen’s ‘you won’t win anything with kids’ rant but at odds of 20-1 for England to win the World Cup for the first time in 52 years, you might just get away with it this time round.
A group consisting of Tunisia and Panama, England are expected to qualify for the knock-out stages but as we have all seen before, nothing should be taken for granted.
