Virgil van Dijk heavily backed for PFA Player of the Year

The Netherlands skipper has transformed the Liverpool defence since joining in January.

Liverpool’s Mo Salah may be the favourite for the PFA Player of the Year award, but it is their commanding centre-half that is receiving the most bets through our site.

53.6% of bets on the market in the last seven days have been on van Dijk at 40/1. Over six times as many bets as the next most backed, Lucas Moura (8.7%).

The Reds have become known for their scintillating attack and leaky defence in recent years, but thanks to Virgil van Dijk this preconception is changing. Liverpool currently sit top of the league having won three from three, and they are yet to concede a goal.

Furthermore, Jurgen Klopp’s side have not conceded a goal at Anfield since February – Van Dijk joined them in January from Southampton for £75 million. He looks to be worth every penny.

Looking at past winners would not give backers a great deal of optimism. Since 1994 just one defender has won the award - John Terry back in 2005. Chelsea conceded just 15 goals on their way to the title that season.

Oddschecker spokesman, George Elek: 'Liverpool's attacking prowess has been well documented in recent weeks, but the Premier League second favourites are yet to concede a goal so far this season.

Allison has enjoyed a fairly easy start to life at Anfield due to the form of van Dijk, who would have to continue his titanic form if they are to keep pace with Manchester City.'
