Odds have been slashed on the Northern Irishman to take over at Old Trafford.
It’s no secret that punters think Jose Mourinho’s days are numbered, but what might come as a surprise is that former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has emerged as a front runner to replace him. Having started out as far as 66/1 earlier this week, he’s now as short as 10/1.
He’s the most backed for the job in the last 24 hours, accumulating 28% of all bets on the next Red Devils manager, more so than favourite Zinedine Zidane.
He remains behind the market leader for now. Zidane is still giving Red Devils fans a license to dream, odds-on in places at 8/13. Not only Zizou’s legendary status as a player, but also his short and sweet managerial debut at Real Madrid place him as the fan and bookies’ favourite to bring joy back to the Theatre of Dreams.
The United faithful could be forgiven for wishing for as many fireworks on the pitch as there have been off it so far this season. Having endured lacklustre performances and highly publicised bust-ups, there’s a palpable air of negativity around a club that yearn for the successes of old.
Rodgers has been busy showing what “great character” can achieve at Celtic, heralded for bringing an exciting brand of football back to the Scottish league, but the challenges of the Premier League have proven a little too much for him in the past. Would United fans ever welcome the former Anfield man?
Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson said: “One of the more surprising movements in the market has been Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.
“He’s attracting a surprising amount of bets for one of the biggest jobs in world football, even after a faltering start to the season, both domestically and in Europe.
“Bookies have sat up and took notice, cutting his odds from 66/1 earlier in the week into just 10/1. With such a movement in the market, this is definitely one to keep an eye on.”
