The Brentford boss and Midlands native now one of the front-runners to take over at Villa Park.
It’s been a long week of speculation that shows no signs of slowing, and now Brentford boss Dean Smith is odds-on with one bookmaker to make a move to Aston Villa and become the clubs new manager.
Smith has enjoyed a multitude of plaudits during his time at Brentford, gaining a reputation as one of the best managers outside of the Premier League.
The former Walsall manager was installed as one of the favourites as soon as Steve Bruce was sacked, however his odds were as big as 25/1 just yesterday, as Thierry Henry was thought to be on the verge of taking over.
However, that speculation has cooled significantly thanks to reports suggesting that Henry turned down an offer for the role, with Monaco thought to also be in line to offer Henry a position in management.
Smith is now again at the top end of the betting market and is 2/1 best price to take over, and as short as 4/9. Rui Faria remains the favourite with most bookmakers: He is 7/4 best price to get his first job in management.
Oddschecker Spokesman George Elek: “Now Thierry Henry is out of the running for the Aston Villa job, it looks to be a two horse race between Rui Faria and Dean Smith for the role. Smith was as big as 25/1 yesterday but that has come in all the way to 4/9 in places as the Brentford boss could move back to his native midlands and join one of the biggest sides in the second tier.”
