English clubs touted to squash Spanish stranglehold on Champions League

An English victory for the first time in seven seasons is a big possibility, according to punters.

Punters are putting money down at the thought of this season being the first time since 2012 that an English side wins the Champions League.

In the 'Nationality of winner' market, bookies have touted any English side as close second favourites at 9/4, cut from 3/1.

That’s just a shade more unlikely than any Spanish side to lift the trophy at 7/4, although punters are not currently interested in Real Madrid or Barcelona.

In total, 68% of all bets on the nationality of the winner have been placed on England, with Spain accruing just 12% of bets.

Juventus’ dominant win against Manchester United has seen any Italian side winning the competition cut from 9/2 into 4/1

Any German side to lift the trophy in Madrid is 6/1, with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke and Hoffenheim all representing the Bundesliga.

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “Given Manchester United's loss at home to Juventus and Tottenham's struggles in the competition so far, you have to wonder if UK punters are betting with their hearts rather than their heads.

“However, the inclusion of favourites Manchester City give punters more than a fighting chance, with Liverpool also worth keeping an eye on.”
