The Sheffield United striker has been a revelation in this campaign.
Before the start of the 2018/19 season, Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp was priced at 66/1 to finish the season as the Championship’s top scorer.
An unlikely candidate, the Blades’ captain has netted an astonishing 22 goals in 29 league games so far this season, helping his side to third in the table and giving them hope of promotion to the Premier League.
The 33-year-old's most recent goals came as a hat-trick which saw his side come back from 3-0 down at Villa Park on Friday.
As a result of his scoring form, Sharp now finds himself leading the top goal scorer market, priced as short as 6/4, and a best price of 9/4. Teemu Pukki, of leaders Norwich City, is his closest current rival at 7/2.
Having scored thirteen times in the entire 2017/18 season, bookies certainly had not anticipated anything like this term’s return. His form has seen the implied probability of him ending this season as top scorer rocket from 1.5% to as much as 40%.
Some bookies did have him shorter at 33/1 before the season got under way, but that best price of 66/1 put him level with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday’s Fernando Forestieri (3 goals), and Derby’s Tom Lawrence (4 goals).
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: "Billy Sharp's goal scoring instincts have not deserted him in the latter part of his career, as he continues to fire the Blades towards the Premier League.
"Punters should maybe keep it in mind that manager Chris Wilder has a plethora of options on the bench, with Scott Hogan and Gary Madine brought in last month, so the marksman may be able to share some of the burden in the run-in."
