Solskjaer’s unbeaten run came to an abrupt halt at the hands of the French champions.
Manchester United’s blistering run of form under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came crashing down with a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League tie against Paris Saint Germain.
Priced as short as 18/1 before the game at Old Trafford kicked off, the Red Devils now find themselves staring at a two goal deficit and a best price of 125/1 to win the competition. Meanwhile, their opponents PSG have had their odds halved from 10/1 to 5/1.
Accruing 54% of bets on the market in the week leading up to the clash, punters had previously fancied the price on United given their scintillating league form, but they had little to offer in this European tie.
After a dismal goalless first half, in which the main talking points were a flurry of yellow cards from the referee, the game had not been dominated by either side.
However, PSG were quick out of the blocks in the second half and a goal from Presnel Kimpembe opened the scoring from an Angel Di Maria corner. The Argentine then assisted a rapid breakaway goal scored by the always threatening Kylian Mbappe.
With Paul Pogba sent off with minutes to go and now suspended for the second leg, United’s fate in the competition is looking all but decided before even travelling to Paris.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “There’s no question that Solskjaer has done a fine job of reversing Manchester United’s fortunes in the Premier League, with his side now firmly pushing for a top four finish.
“Taking on the giants of Europe is another matter though, and it looks like the chunk of punters that backed United before Tuesday night might have just got caught up in the dream.”
