The Dutchman is three times more likely to win than Sergio Aguero, according to bookies.
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been cut from 5/4 to 3/5 to win the PFA Player of the Year award.
Scoring twice in his team’s 5-0 demolition of Watford in the Premier League last night, bookies have reacted by slashing prices on the rock solid Dutchman back to odds-on and making him an even clearer favourite in the market.
Punters have followed suit, with 88% of bets in the last 24 hours going on van Dijk.
Consistently impressing this season and proving himself pivotal to the success of this Liverpool side, the 27-year-old has hovered around the even money mark since Christmas. The 50/1 on offer when markets opened in August is a distant memory.
Manchester City star Sergio Aguero is his closest rival, but has drifted from 3/1 to 9/2 in places. Meanwhile, his teammate Raheem Sterling has been cut to 10/1 after a string of impressive displays.
Last year’s winner Mo Salah is out at 16/1 to receive the accolade in back-to-back seasons, with the Egyptian’s form slipping.
While Manchester City (8/13) are now clear favourites to win the Premier League title ahead of Liverpool (13/8), the individual award looks set to go the other way.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “Virgil van Dijk is bidding to become the first defender to win the PFA Player of the Year award since John Terry in 2004-05.
“While bookies don’t currently fancy it to be a title-winning season for Liverpool as it was for JT, he looks more than worthy of the honour having established himself as the Reds’ talisman.”
